Built in the 17th century, the spice bazaar in Eminonu, Istanbul, was originally an extension of the New Mosque complex, and was used to support the mosque. Because it was built with revenue from duties on Egyptian imports, it is also called the Egyptian bazaar. Because spices were such an essential part of medieval cooking, the bazaar specialized in them, especially those from the orient, as it still does today.
