Basilica Cistern

This cistern was built in 532 during the reign of Justinian, mostly to provide water for the Great Palace. After the conquest of Constantinople, the Ottomans didn't even know it existed, until a century later when they found people collecting water and catching fish from holes in the ground. It is a major tourist attraction today, and a must-see when you visit Istanbul.
