The "new mosque" (completed in 1663) is one of Eminonu, Istanbul's most prominent features. It was commissioned and built under the oversight of two women, Safiye (the mother of Mehmet III) and Turhan Hadice, the mother of Mehmet IV, during a time when the sultan's mothers held great power. When it was built, it had a hospital, a school, and public baths.
