The Fatih district is known as a place where more devout Muslims live, while Fener and Balat became the homes of Greek-speaking Jews during the time of the Byzantine Empire. During the Spanish Inquisition, the Sultan opened the doors to Jews fleeing from Spain, many of which settled in the Fener and Balat districts. The Greek Orthodox Patriarchate is also located in Fener.
