Beyoğlu's pedestrianized main street was once called the "Grand Rue de Pera," and was the place for foreign embassies before the capital was moved from Istanbul to Ankara. The buildings now serve as consulates, and the entire area is full of interesting shops and happening night spots. There is also an antique tram which runs its length, from Taksim Square, through Galatasaray Square, to the "Tünel" where a train takes you down the hill to Karaköy, on the norther shore of the Golden Horn.
