Founded by Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent and built by the architect Sinan between 1550 and 1557, the Suleymaniye Mosque was not only provided a place of worship, but also a hospital, school, bath house, caravanserai and soup kitchen to feed the poor. It can be seen for miles, dominating the hill over the Golden Horn of Istanbul.
