This mosque was was the first large mosque built after the conquest of Istanbul in 1453. It was funded by Mahmut Pasa, a Byzantine who converted to Islam and served as Grand Vizier to Mehmet the Conqueror. Unfortunately, his ineptness as a military commander resulted in his execution, and his internment in a tomb behind the mosque.
