GDB, great link, thanks!

There are more than 800 ancient archaeological sites in Turkey!

It is claimed there are more Greek and Roman ruins in Anatolia than in Greece or Italy.

All along the Med Coast from Fethiye to Antalya lie the ruins of the ancient Lycians.

Peter Talloen in an anchaeologist who lives part time in Kaş. You can read an interview of him called:

Peter Talloen and His Ancient Lycian Sites

Scroll toward the bottom for his suggested list of top ten classical sites in Turkey.

Peter is also the lead archaeolgist for Sagalassos which is a bit off the beaten path but wll worth the visit as it also includes the Burdur Museum which has artifacts from Sagalassos, Kybra (DEAD LINK) and Aphrodisias (DEAD LINK)

For the religious traveller there are many Holy Sites in Turkey
"This ancient land is also home to many sites sacred to the Jewish, Christian, and Muslim faiths. While many Christians do not think of Turkey as a biblical land, during much of the first century it was the center for the young church."

Aspendos, Ephesus, Side, Pergamum, Demre, (and many others) all have spectacular theatres some of which have remained intact and others partially restored.

NOTE: there are NO amphitheatres in Anatolia even though you will see the word loosely used describing theatres. An amphitheatre is " a round or oval building, typically unroofed, with a central space for the presentation of dramatic or sporting events."

Depending on where you will start your holiday, but if you like historical sites, one of the best place you can visit in Turkey is Ephesus. http://www.marmaristravel.net/attractions/ancient-city-of-ephesus/

If you arlready there please visit the archelogical museum in selcuk (very close to ephesus in town selcuk) and also the temple of Artemis.

If you read up about Mary's house (Mereyemana) it appears that there is absolutely no evidence that it was Mary's house. It was all down to a dream, someone dreamed about Mary's house and the area resembled the vision in the dream. good tourist material though, and good kebabs in Selcuk
