  1. Hello everyone, this is a great forum with great advice, a big thank you to everyone who posts on here! In short I've been living here in Turkey for around 10 months now, I have a 2 year residence permit and bought a house after getting my permit. After setting up a private company here with the intention of doing business, expenses have mounted tremendously and my savings have certainly dwindled. I searched about this but couldn't find a clear answer and I feel that very often even when asking a government official, they don't have an answer (plus my Turkish is not so fun to interact with). Can I apply for a job and get a work permit without having to change my residence permit? I feel it will be a hassle to change the status for myself and my large family. I really doubt this can be easily pulled off, but does anyone have experience with getting a work permit after getting a residence permit and what was the process? Thanks in advance, peace!
  2. Hello everyone, Im thinking of making the move to Istanbul in the near future. I am currently teaching English in Taiwan, and I would like to continue teaching English in Turkey. I would like to teach in a university rather than a private language school. Everything I have read so far suggests that working in a university is far more relaxed. That being said, I will work in a private language school if that is all that is available. My question is: when is the best time to look for university jobs in Istanbul? Do I need to do an in-person interview? Is there any way I can begin my job hunt from Taiwan? Any information or resources would be of great help! Also, I have 4 years teaching experience, a BA from an American university and a TEFL certificate. Thanks again!
  3. Hello, I am thinking about moving to turkey but I am not able to find governmental universities in social sciences bachelor programs in English, and i did find private universities but those are so expensive, i was wondering if anyone has any tips for me on how to get into universities. I would also like some opinion about the work circumstances in turkey, i speak four languages ( Farsi, Dutch, English, Turkish), I do speak Turkish on a B2/C1 scale although I am not a Turk. another thing that I was wondering is the beginner salaries and work circumstances, as if I move I have to provide for myself and live independently. is it difficult to live on your own in turkey as a 20 year old girl ( in big cities, like Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Antalya) ? I am aware of the culture and most of the traditions but in real life it is different, is the society used to young girls living on their own or do people look at it in a different way? hope to be able to get some help from you guys Thank you
  4. Im a Turkish citzen and an American citzen and I was wondering if I completed nursing school in America, can I do nursing in Turkey? What are the steps for it? I qualify to work in state hospitals since I was born in Turkey and moved to the states when I was 4 years old. I can speak Turkish and English both fluently although my English is better then my Turkish. And another question is it hard to get a job as a nurse in Turkey and what are the wages?
  5. Hello to all, Can I get a work permit if I invest in a business in Turkey? One of the owners is a Turkish citizen (I am aware partnership is never a good idea but I just wanted to ask this question ). The business is a very nice establish restaurant with excellent reviews; they are looking for a partnership. Since I am an American citizen (fluent in English) and also fluent in Farsi, I do not think the work permit should be a big problem. I do not think any Turkish worker can compete with me as far as English and Farsi. I can bring much more American and Persian customers to the restaurant and interact with them much more than an average Turk can (of course, because of my language skills). Not sure about any of these. Please share your thoughts and experience. Thank you Ramin
  6. Hi all I have worked and resided in turkey for several years I quit my job in march 2013 and the employer soon after cancelled my work permit, as is standard. Now, i am still in possession of my residence permit which states validity until may 2014 However the residence permit states that the reason of issue was work. Am i right in thinking that my work and residence status are intricately linked? i.e. no work permission therefore no more residence permission Do i need to renew my residence or can i wait until may 2014 any thoughts greatly appreciated
  7. Hi, my name is dale, i just found this forum today and figured i had best try and get involved and get some help. I am currently a painter and decorator living in the uk, but have a very close relationship with a turkish national whom i am eager to be nearer. Based on this i decided that as i did not wish to continue painting, and would need a job in which would allow me to work in turkey i thought about teaching english. I was always interested in teaching and helping people but after leaving school i fell straight into the building trade. Anyway, now at age 26 and wishing to change not only career but country, i enrolled on the ittt tefl/tesol course scheduled for october and lasting 4 intensive weeks which i believed would allow me to start somewhere on my path to moving and working. However having briefly read a little in the section here, i am now worried that i may be in over my head ) i am enthusaistic and determined to try for what i want but sometimes it is not enough. If there is anyone here who has done similar to me or has experience in what i am trying to achieve i would be forever grateful for any help and advice you can give me on my quest i really want to make this a success but am now quite scared about my options and what i need to do. Thankyou for taking the time to read dale
  8. Hey all on this very helpful and overwhelmingly friendly forum! What are the best job prospects in Turkey? Growing sectors? Top salaries? Best job security?
  9. I’ve been reading some of the previous postings and thought hopefully someone could possibly advise me in my situation.I would like my Turkish boyfriend to come visit me in the London, the main reason for this is I would like to see how he can adapt to London life as he has never visited the UK. Seeing this will let me know if we have a future together.I visited/stayed with his family in Mersin in November and they are very lovely.I bonded with his family and found myself thinking more seriously of a future with him.I will visit them again March next year. I have read some horror stories and yes I am worried, my family are worried but I know if they met him they would love him, but this is why I want him to come to the UK to see if me and him have a future. He has never asked for money and he is working to pay for his own flight tickets etc. Options: 1 – Comes to UK on a Tourist /General Visa, multiple visits up to 6 months, problem is he cannot work, which will be frustrating for him. But he can meet my friends and family and see how he integrates in the UK. How easy is it for him to obtain a permit to work once he is on a tourist visa? Or is this not advisable. 2- Ankara Agreement – I have read about this but he is not a ‘skilled’ worker. He is a carpenter; furniture maker however has no qualification on paper to show this. 3- Fiance Visa, this way I get time to see if me and him have a future together in the UK and gives us 6 months to ‘decide’ if we get married . But what happens if the relationship doesn’t work. Would I have to inform the Home Office and he goes back to Turkey I assume. If me and him work out then we marry in the 6months and he applies for settlement I guess. Does he need an pass English test before? This is the easier option? Me and him have spoken a lot about this, we do not want to rush, but I know if he goes to the army, I would be very disheartened if I have to wait over a year till he is finished. I want him to see what London life is like. If he doesn’t like London and we decide we still want to be together, we have spoken about the possibility of me moving turkey. But I would definitely want to marry in the UK. And I am initially thinking of me and him having a life in UK not Turkey.I earn £30,000 a year and I rent my apartment, I do not own a property. I am of Indian origin, British Citizen born in UK so our families understand certain traditions/culture.I am 29 he is 21. I must point I look very young for my age.He has no Turkish passport- so will need to applyMilitary service starts Nov 2013 – but I read if he lives in London he can be exempt and serve only 21days.Any type of advice would help. I feel very lost and do not know where to turn.
