  1. Three police officers stayed for half an hour and wrote down a letter that me and my other housemate signed, saying we lived there, the house was a positive place, that i worked online and did not work in Turkey etc. I'm applying for my 3rd RP, another renewal. I've applied for 2 years this time. Is it normal? I should mention my card expires 23rd August, but i applied on 20th august and got appointment on 27th of august. They mentioned to apply before the expiry date next time, but I'm still unsure if they had visited because of the expired date OR because i have an application under processing, I'm concerned though, i generally only give documents only when i am asked and just let the immigration officer ask for what he requires, so he did not ask for financial information and did not ask for an undertaking when submitting my renewal. I simply gave real estate type of form saying i lived at the address, and of course my application and insurance. SO maybe they flagged my application for me to be visited by police to confirm my residence address and get an undertaking. Should I go back to immigration office in Izmir and give them more documents? i currently have the temporary residence permit paper and receipt they gave me and maybe i stupidly thought it was all approved and i just needed the card mailed, but i just feel after police visited you, very worried. Another question, if your 2 year renewal is only given 1 year, do you get half the price refunded (cause i payed double) or can you get the amount added to the following year? Maybe it's too complex for the computer system though!
  2. Police Checkpoints If you drive for any long distance in Turkey, you'll likely come across a police checkpoint. A police car will be parked on the side of the roads, and traffic cones arranged to form a lane for the vehicles being checked. In most cases, as soon as the police learn that you are a foreigner and driving a rental car, they will waive you on. If in doubt about the signal they are giving, pull over anyway to make sure. Police checks are set up for three main reasons: Routine license, registration, and insurance checks Drunk driver checks, where drivers must blow into a portable alcohol sensor Searches for weapons and certain individuals (more common in Eastern and Southeastern Turkey) Drunk driver checkpoints are usually located on roads just outside of tourist resorts and in areas near establishments where alcohol is served. If you are stopped by a police checkpoint, pull over, remain in your car, turn off the engine and roll down your window. If you are stopped at night, turn off your headlights and turn on your interior light. It enables the police to see the interior of the vehicle and puts them more at ease. It is always a good idea to keep your hands where they can be seen, and not make any sudden moves which might be misinterpreted. Be prepared to show them your passport or residence permit, driving license, car registration, and insurance papers. In rental cars, these documents are normally kept in a small booklet kept under a strap on the driver's side sun visor. Speed (Radar) Traps Police also conduct radar operations as a checkpoint. A car, sometimes unmarked, will point a hand-held or dash-mounted radar at approaching traffic and measure their speed. You'll be allowed to drive by, but the radar operator will radio ahead to other policemen who will signal you to pull over. If you get a ticket, the back of the ticket will tell you where you can pay the fine (typically at a bank or a PTT, or Turkish post office). If you don't pay the ticket within the time specified on the back of the ticket, the fine will double, then double again after more time has passed.   4. Hi, I sought some advice on applying for a short term residence permit before coming out to Turkey. One thing I was told was that I'd need to immediately go and register with the local police station (for me, Izmir). I've looked this up online, however, and the only things I can find referring to the need to do this is to apply for a residence permit. As I understand it, this has now moved online (I have just completed an application and have an appointment date for February). Can anyone tell me if I still need to go and register with the local police station for whatever reason? A friend of mine from Lebanon had to do this when living in the UK just so that the state knows where he is - would it be the same for me in Turkey? Bit about me: British citizen conducting research in Izmir and currently holding an appropriate visa which expires Jan 2019. Applied for a residence permit so that I can stay beyond the 90 days allowed on my visa. Thanks for any advice.
