On the north face of the obelisk base, a relief depicts Emperor Theodosius and his court. The Emporer is holding a wreath, probably the price for the winner of a chariot race or other contest which took place here in the hippodrome. Below this are probably spectators watching an event. -

Here you can see where gold-plated bronze plaques were affixed by Constantine VII, commemorations to the victories of his grandfather Basil I. These plaques were plundered during the fourth crusade. Later, Ottoman Janissaries would climb this obelisk as a test of courage, causing further damage. -
Constantine VII restored this obelisk and covered it in bronze plaques coated with gold, depicting the victories of his grandfather, Basil I. Unfortunately these were plundered during the fourth crusade and melted down. Later, Ottoman Janissaries (the Sultan's personal guard) would climb it as a test of courage, which caused further damage. -
This obelisk was restored from a previous version by Constantine VII. It was covered in bronze plaques which were plated in gold, and depicting victorious battle scenes of his grandfather, Basil I. During the fourth crusade, the crusaders removed them and melted them down. -
