  1. At some point, while living in Turkey, you'll probably have to go to a government office called the Nüfus for one thing or another. In this guide, I'll explain what the Nüfus is, what it does, and how you can find your local Nüfus and go there. What is the Nüfus? The Nüfus ve Vatandaşlık İşleri Genel Müdürlüğü (General Directorate of Population and Citizenship Affairs, or Nüfus), is Turkey's government office which issues Turkish citizens' identification cards, driving licenses, birth, marriage, divorce and death certificates. It also keeps records of these documents. The Nüfus also handles applications for Turkish citizenship and matters concerning citizenship. Finding Your Local Nüfus Each district, in each province of Turkey, has a Nüfus office. You can find the one nearest you here: https://nvi.gov.tr/ilce-nufus-mudurlukleri Select your il (province) in the first box and your ilçe (district) in the second box. This will produce an address with contact telephone numbers, and a small zoomable map showing the location of the Nüfus for that district. Visiting the Nüfus By Appointment The Nüfus online appointment system only accepts the identification numbers of Turkish citizens and not the identification numbers of foreigners. For that reason, foreigners may walk in without an appointment (see below). But if you're a Turkish citizen or a Turkish citizen will be coming with you, you can use your (or their) Turkish citizen ID number to make an appointment, here: https://randevu.nvi.gov.tr/ Use Google Chrome with the Google Translate extension to translate the page if necessary. To learn how to do this, see Using the Google Chrome Browser with the Google Translate Extension. On the first page, select the type of business you need to do (you can also cancel an existing appointment on this page). Fill out the form with your details and contact number, and continue, to make an appointment. When you go to your appointment, make sure to check-in at the main service desk and get a number. Even though you have an appointment, the system still runs by the numbers, so have a seat and watch the monitor until your number comes up. By Walking In (As a Foreigner) Go to the check-in desk and show them your residence permit. They'll understand the situation (that you couldn't make an appointment because the online system won't let you), and give you a number. As above, sit in the waiting area and watch the monitor until your number's called. Assistance and Support Nüfus Support Website: The Nüfus support website has a listing of frequently asked questions as well as listings of required documents you'll need for your appointment. Nüfus Telephone Help Line: The Nüfus also has a helpline you can call, from any phone in Turkey, at 199. From outside of Turkey, you can reach the Nüfus at +90 312 591 2133 or 2389. There is an English option. Turkish Culture, Customs, Politics and Laws Forum: If you have a question about the Turkish government or its laws, search our forums to see if it's already been answered. if it hasn't, feel free to open a new topic. Ken Grubb As a special investigator for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and teacher for the University of Maryland, Ken Grubb has lived and worked in Turkey since 1997. He now lives in Antalya, where he researches and writes guides to help others live skillfully in Turkey.
  2. I just received my resident permit card. I have read on this site, that you need to register your address at the population directorate (nüfus) 20 business days after receiving the permit. As I'm staying at a friends place I don't have a rental contract on my name to prove my address, how do I register my address at the Nüfus in this case?
  3. In my home rent contract my name and my wife's name are written. I went to the Population and Citizenship Bureau (Nüfus) in order to obtain a proof of address document. They gave me and there is no problem. Now, if my wife want to get it in order to renew her residence permit I should go with her to the Nüfus or she just requires to bring the contract (notary approved copy) to the Nüfus and they will give her easily? Is there any problem with this? Maybe they said that this address is submitted by another person since they don't know she is my wife, right? Does the contract with notary stamp solve the problem?
