  1. When you apply for a residence permit in Turkey, you'll need to prove you have enough money to support yourself (and your family, if you have one), for the duration of the residence permit you're applying for. The money doesn't have to come from Turkey or be in a Turkish bank. It can be from any source, such as a salary, pension, rental income, investments, or you can use your savings in a bank account. How Much Money Do I Need to Get a Residence Permit? There isn't any set answer to that question, because it depends on your situation. The main reason the Göç İdaresi Genel Müdürlüğü (Directorate General of Migration Management or the immigration office) requires proof of financial ability is to make sure that you won't be living on the street or that you won't be working illegally. You'll be Evaluated as an Individual According to the immigration office's approach to evaluating foreigners for residence, each foreigner is viewed as an individual in their own situation. So if you don't have much money to live on, it doesn't necessarily mean your residence permit application will be rejected. With even a modest income, such as a monthly payout from your government's social security retirement fund can be enough, if you can also show that your lifestyle allows you to live on that amount of money. The Turkish Minimum Wage If there is any minimum amount of money you'll need to have, it's an amount of money equal to the Turkish minimum wage, plus one-third of that amount for each of your family members. Turkey Monthly Minimum Wage for 2021 Gross Minimum Wage ₺3,557.50 Net Minimum Wage, Single Without Children ₺2,825.90 Net Minimum Wage, with Unemployed Spouse ₺2,879.57 Net Minimum Wage, with Unemployed Spouse and One Child ₺2,919.81 Net Minimum Wage , with Unemployed Spouse and Two Children ₺2,960.06 Net Minimum Wage, with Unemployed Spouse and Three or More Children ₺3,013.72 Long-term Residence Permits If you're applying for a long-term residence permit, you must prove that you have a continuous income, for life, of at least the Turkish minimum wage and again, an additional one-third for each family member. Types of Savings or Income and Documentation Money in the Bank Typically, the immigration specialist will want printouts of your home country bank account, showing all deposits and withdrawals for the last six months. These are regular printouts you can make using a home printer. Have these printouts with you when you go to your appointment. You Don't Need a Turkish Bank Account. A foreign bank account is okay. However, the immigration specialist may ask for additional proof of income, such as a stamped and signed, or e-signed letter from your bank, showing deposits and withdrawals for the last six months. You may also get an SMS message or e-mail asking you to bring this after you complete your online application. A Large Recent Deposit May Not Be Accepted. If the only proof of financial capacity you have is a large sum of money recently deposited into a bank account, be it a Turkish or foreign one, you'll probably be asked for proof of where the money came from. In the past, many foreigners borrowed money, opened a Turkish bank account, and deposited a large amount of money into it. Then after their interview, they withdrew the money and paid back the loan. Then they worked illegally. Because of this, the immigration office usually asks for proof of the last six months of your income. Employment Income To prove employment income, your bank account records showing deposits of your salary should be enough. However, the immigration specialist may also ask for a letter from your employer, on a stamped and signed or digitally signed letter, on company letterhead, which shows how much money you make and that this money will continue during the duration of your stay in Turkey. Pension For retirees, a simple printout of the last six months of your bank account deposits and withdrawals is usually enough. If you're asked for more, they'll probably want a stamped and signed, or e-signed letter from your pension provider using their letterhead. The letter will need to state the amount, frequency, and duration of your pension payments. Rental Income If you have rental income from rental properties you own, a statement of monthly rental income and expenses should suffice. If it doesn't, the immigration specialist may ask for a stamped and signed or digitally signed statement of income and expenses from your property manager. If you're managing the property yourself, you may be asked for the title deed of the rental property and a rental contract between you and the tenant. Investment Income If you have money in a mutual fund or a private retirement plan, you'll need the last six months of the statements of activity. Putting Things into Perspective It's easy to feel a little stressed about this. But think about it this way. Imagine you're having a conversation with a friend talking about your move to Turkey. They ask you if you have enough to support yourself, and you say "yes." Then they ask, "how do you know?" What you'd tell your friend in this imaginary conversation is the same thing you'll be telling the immigration specialist. And if you already have the money or it's guaranteed as income, you'll already have the documentation to prove it. Declaring Your Financial Capacity in the Residence Permit Application System All applications for residence permits are created and submitted using the e-ikamet online residence permit application system. İkamet means "residence." The immigration office manages the system, which you'll find it at https://e-ikamet.goc.gov.tr/. While going through the online process, you'll be asked to declare you have enough money to live on and how much it is. That's all you'll have to do. Then the end of the process, the system will provide you with an appointment date and time for you to go to the local immigration office and submit documents that prove that you have enough income or savings, among other things such proof of an address and health insurance. So you'll make the declaration during your online application, then prove it with documents at your appointment. Learn more about the online residence permit application system. If You Live Off of Your Savings While completing your online application, if you have an amount of money in your bank account and will be living from that, and have no monthly income, don't put "zero" (0) in the box where it asks for your monthly income. Instead, divide the money you have in the bank by 12, and use that number as your monthly income. Or if you're applying for a two-year residence permit, divide it by 24. SMS or E-mail Messages Asking for Documents After you declare your income or savings in the online application system, complete your application and get your appointment at the local immigration office, you may receive an SMS message or an e-mail (depending on the communications method you chose). The message will tell you specifically what additional proof of income you need to bring to your interview. The Istanbul immigration offices usually send these messages, mostly because they receive a lot of fraudulent applications and fake documentation. If you get one of these messages, it'll probably ask you for a stamped and signed letter from your bank certifying your last six months of banking deposits and withdrawals, or a similar letter from whatever company provides your income or maintains your savings or investments. If your financial documents aren't in the western alphabet, you'll need to have them translated into Turkish by a sworn translator. Learn more about additional requirements in Istanbul. Presenting Documentary Proof of Income or Savings at Your Appointment When you go to your appointment, you'll meet an immigration specialist and present your application package. Your application package will include your downloaded and printed İkamet İzni Kayıt Formu (Residence Permit Registration Form), health insurance, proof of address, and proof you have enough money to live on. If in Doubt, Bring It! If you have any documents related to your income and aren't sure whether you should bring them to your appointment or not, bring them. It's better to have them and not need them than to need them and not have them. Insufficient or Missing Documentation of Income If you can't get the requested documentation in time for your interview, or the immigration specialist looks over what you have and says it's insufficient, they'll give you up to 30 days to get the documents you need. When you get them, you can return to the immigration office and give the documents to the immigration specialist handling your case. You won't need an appointment. Important! Make sure you return with the documentation within the deadline they give you. If you don't, your application will be rejected (not just canceled, but rejected) because of insufficient documentation. If your application is rejected, you'll be unable to re-apply for the same type of residence permit for six months.   2. If your residence permit application is rejected, or you get less time than you applied for, you may be able to get a refund of some of the application fees. It depends on what kind of document the immigration specialist gives you at the end of your appointment. If You Received a Tebliğ Tebellüğü Belgesi (Official Communication Document) This document is an A-4 sized paper which simply says the Göç İdaresi Genel Müdürlüğü (Directorate General of Migration Management, or immigration office) has received your application and that they will process it. It also says your fees won't be refunded. Both you and the immigration specialist sign it. If you get one of these, unfortunately, you can't get a refund of any of the fees you paid. If You Received a Residence Permit Application Document The İkamet İzni Müracaat Belgesi (Residence Permit Application Document) is also on an A-4 sized paper, but it has your photo on it. At the top it says "Temporary Residence Permit" and that it's valid for 90 days. If you received one of these, your residence is basically approved. But you may, for example, be given one year of residence instead of the two years you applied for. Or you may later receive a message to go to the local immigration office and be given a rejection letter for some reason. Refunds are Only Sent to Turkish Bank Accounts You'll need a Turkish bank account in your name to receive the refund, no matter how you made the payment. Required Documents for a Refund A document from the immigration office which states you're no longer interested in continuing the residence permit process. To get this you'll need your fee payment receipts. A written request from you containing your identifying information and your bank information including the IBAN number. It should also say that you want a refund, what the refund is for, and how much you want to be refunded. Copies of the fee payment receipts. If You Paid Online Mail the documents to: Veraset Harçları Vergi Dairesi Ziraat Mahallesi, Çankiri Cd. No: 15, 06590 Altındağ / Ankara Telephone: 0312 324 2075, extension 7113 or 7114 If You Paid at a Tax Office You'll need the documents as described above. In your personal request, specify which tax office you paid the fees to. You can mail the documents to the tax office where you paid, or take them personally if it's nearby. If You Paid at a Bank If you paid the fees at a participating bank, you actually paid the tax office using their account at the bank. If it's not written on the fee receipt, you'll need to go to the bank and learn the address of the tax office the fees were sent to, then mail the documents to the tax office. Include the tax office's bank account number that the fees were paid into in your request. Processing Time It usually takes around two or three weeks before the refund is sent to your Turkish bank account. So how much does it cost to get a residence permit in Turkey? A Turkey residence permit costs on average $8.75 US dollars for the first month and $2.60 for each additional month of residence, with a second fee of ₺125 for printing the residence permit card. In this case, it's for a two-year residence permit, with no one-time entry fee. When you finish your residence permit registration at https://e-ikamet.goc.gov.tr/, the online system will automatically calculate your residence permit fees and give you a total cost. When you download your completed İkamet İzni Kayıt Formu (Residence Permit Registration Form), the total cost will be printed on the first page. Regardless of what calculations you've made, that is the fee you must pay. But you can also calculate the cost before you apply for a residence permit. How to Calculate the Residence Permit Processing Fee The İkamet Harç Bedeli (Residence Permit Processing Fee) is for reviewing and processing your residence permit application. It's charged according to nationality and is based on the US dollar, so it can be different from person to person and day to day, depending on currency exchange rates. It also varies because there's a fee for each day the residence permit covers in the first month (with a minimum and maximum amount), and then a fixed fee for each additional month. Insider Tip: Children under age 18 get a 50% discount on the Residence Permit Processing Fee. So go to your favorite online currency converter (I use Oanda.com), and convert it to Turkish Lira. Here's a link to Oanda.com. https://www.oanda.com/ It won't be exact because currency prices fluctuate, and also vary from place to place. But it will give you a close approximation of what the cost will be in Turkish Lira. Add the Kart Bedeli (Card Printing Fee): The card printing fee is always the same. There are no discounts. So take the total cost of the Residence Permit Application fee and add ₺125. That's your final amount, unless you entered Turkey without a visa. Go Back to the Top If You Entered Turkey Without a Visa Turkey has visa-free entry agreements with various countries. If your country is one of them, you can enter Turkey with your national ID card. Unfortunately, these visa-free entry agreements only apply to entering the country for tourism. Because you want to live in Turkey, you'll have to pay a one-time Tek Giriş Harcı (Single-entry Fee). This fee is always the same. There are no discounts. So, if you entered Turkey without a visa, add ₺758.90 to your total cost. Insider Tip: the single-entry fee is paid at the time of your appointment, on the direction of the immigration specialist who interviews you, or in advance at a bank using a special payment code (see Paying Residence Permit Fees at a Participating Bank, below). You can instantly learn if you're from a country with a visa-free entry agreement using the e-Visa website. Just complete the first part of the e-visa application. It doesn't result in your applying for an e-visa, it just tells you if you can get one or not or if you can enter with your ID card. If you don't need a visa to enter Turkey, you'll see this message when you try to apply for an e-visa. Unfortunately, it also means that you'll have to pay a one-time single-entry fee when you apply for a residence permit. Go Back to the Top How to Learn if You Can Enter Turkey Without a Visa Go to https://www.evisa.gov.tr/en/. Click "Apply." Select your country, the type of passport (or other travel document) you have, and enter the security verification text, and click "Save and Continue." The system will tell you if you need a visa or if you can enter Turkey with your ID card. It will also tell you if can get an e-visa, or if you must get a visa from a Turkish embassy or consulate. Insider Tip: If you're thinking you can avoid the single-entry fee by buying an e-visa even though you don't need one, well, it doesn't work that way. When you use the e-Visa website and enter your country name, the e-visa system won't let you buy an e-visa. It will tell you to enter with your ID card. So you'll have to pay the single-entry fee when you apply for your residence permit. There's no way around it. Go Back to the Top The Turkish Tax Number A Turkish tax number is a government-issued number used to positively identify people or businesses when they do business with each other or with the Turkish government. Foreigners wanting to get a residence permit in Turkey must first get a tax number, either online or from a tax office, to pay the residence permit fees. If you're applying for a Turkey residence permit the first time, you'll need to get a vergi kimlik numarası (tax identification number) to pay the fees for your residence permit. You can get one easily, and for free. All you need is your passport. Insider Tip: After you get your Turkey residence permit, you'll have a yabancı kimlik numerası (foreigner identification number, or YKN) printed on the front of your residence permit card. You can then use your foreigner identification number instead of your tax number. How to Get a Turkish Tax Number Online Here's the link you need on Turkey's virtual tax office to get a tax number. Go to the Turkish Tax Office website, here: https://ivd.gib.gov.tr/tvd_side/main.jsp Near the center of the page, click Yabancılar İçin Potansiye Vergi Kimlik Numarası (Potential Tax Identification Number for Foreigners). See the image above. Fill out the form, enter the security code in the box provided, and click Tamam (OK). How to Get a Turkish Tax Number at a Tax Office You can go to any tax office, but you can find one near you using Google Maps at https://www.google.com/maps/. Search for your local tax office by using the name of your ilçe (district), and the key phrase vergi dairesi (tax office). You'll then see the nearest tax office marked on the map. Go Back to the Top How to Pay the Turkey Residence Permit Fees Once you have a tax number, you can pay the residence permit fees online, at a tax office, at a participating bank, or at the immigration office cashier, if it has one. There are three ways to pay your Turkey residence permit fees. You can pay: Using the tax office website At tax office At a participating bank At a cashier at the immigration office (if there is one). It's the same website where you can get your tax number as described above. The offices of the Göç İdaresi Genel Müdürlüğü (Directorate General of Migration Management) in provincial city centers which have the same name as the province, such as Izmir (the city) and Antalya (the city) have a co-located vezne (cashier) which is run by the tax office. It's usually in the same building. But branch offices, such as those in various districts of Istanbul, or in towns with a large foreign population, may not have one. In those cases, you'll have to go to another building, somewhere else in town, and pay the fees there. Paying the Fees Before Your Appointment It's best if you can go to the immigration office, say, 45 minutes before your appointment, to pay your fees before your interview. Just find the cashier, show the clerk your downloaded and printed Residence Permit Registration Form and your passport or current residence permit, and pay in cash. Paying the Fees During Your Appointment But let's say you're applying for a two-year residence permit but you're unsure if the immigration specialist will give you the full two years. They may only give you one year. This is often the case for first-time applications, especially in Istanbul. If that's your situation, you can wait for the immigration specialist, at the end of your interview, to decide how long they're going to give you a residence permit for. Then go and pay for the amount of time they tell you and return with the receipt. Go Back to the Top Keep a Copy of Your Residence Permit Fee Payment Receipts You'll need your fee payment receipt to add to your residence permit application package. And there's another reason you might need it—for traveling outside of Turkey and returning before you receive your residence permit card. Receipts Are Required for Travel Outside of Turkey and Reentry If you've applied for a Turkey Residence Permit and your current visa or residence permit is expired, you must get the İkamet İzni Müracaat Belgesi (Residence Permit Application Document) from the immigration office to travel outside of Turkey and return without a visa. The Residence Permit Application Document allows you to be outside of Turkey for up to 15 days and then reenter, provided you have your passport and a copy of the receipts showing you've paid the fees for your residence permit. So be sure to keep your receipts in case you need to travel before you receive your residence permit card. How to Get a Fee Receipt Online If you've lost your receipt, you may be able to get one online. Cost of a Notarized Copy of Your Rental Contract To find a notary, you can just go into town and look for a sign like this. The cost of a notarized copy of a rental contract in Turkey is ₺140. If you later buy a property, you'll submit your tapu (property title deed) instead of a rental contract. A property title deed doesn't need a notarized copy. You can just bring your property title deed and a regular copy to your residence permit application appointment. Cost of Foreign Document Legalization (If Required) If foreign documents are required for your residence permit, such as a marriage certificate or criminal record from your home country (these are not usually required), you must pay to Have your home country government send the document(s) to you (if you don't already have them). Send the document(s) to your country's office which issues apostilles (an apostille certifies the document as genuine) and have the document and apostille sent back to you. Have the document(s) and apostille translated by a sworn translator and notarized. Each country which is a member of the International Apostille Convention lists their prices for an apostille here: https://www.hcch.net/en/instruments/conventions/authorities1/?cid=41 If your country isn't on the list, it means it's not a member of the Apostille Convention. Contact your country's embassy in Turkey or search the internet for your government office which legalizes documents. Cost of Foreign Document and Apostille Translation After you receive the foreign document and apostille from your home country, you must have both translated into Turkish by a sworn translator, and the translation stamped by a notary. The cost of a sworn translation will depend on the language, number of pages, and the complexity of the document. For a one-page document in English, expect to pay at least ₺80. For the notary stamp on the translation (the translator will do this), expect to pay around ₺160.   4. When you apply for a residence permit in Turkey, you must be covered by health insurance. You can use one of the low-cost "expat health insurance" policies many insurance companies sell, or buy a more expensive private insurance policy with greater coverage. After you've been living in Turkey for one year, you can join the Turkish government's comprehensive health insurance plan, called Genel Sağlık Sigortası (General Health Insurance) offered by the Sosyal Güvenlik Kurumu (Social Security Administration, also called SGK). Expat Health Insurance Cost Since the Turkish government mandated health insurance coverage for foreigners and established the minimum coverage requirements, several companies started selling special policies especially for foreigners applying for residence permits. These policies, no matter who sells them, cover the same things to the same levels because they are the government minimums. Yet the prices still vary depending on what the insurance company wants to charge for them. Here's a general idea of what you can expect to pay. What you actually pay may be a bit higher or lower depending on which company you buy your policy from. But to screen out pre-existing conditions, the first year of these policies offer limited coverage which is actually less than the government's requirements. The policy in the second and subsequent years fully covers you to the government's minimum requirements. However, if you get treatment for a medical condition, your next year's policy probably won't cover it because it will be considered a pre-existing condition. Private Health Insurance Cost You can also get a private policy which has more comprehensive coverage, and that won't stop covering you for a medical problem once you've been treated for it. They're more expensive, but if you need the higher level of coverage, they're worth it. The cost varies according to the level of coverage you want, the amount of the cost of medical treatment you want to share, and the minimum amount a medical bill must reach before it starts to pay out. You can get these policies all the way up to the same coverage the government health insurance plan covers, and even more.   5. Most visa or residence permit overstays are minor issues, involving a foreigner forgetting when their visa expires or accidentally staying longer than their visa allows. Short overstays only involve a fine on departure. But longer overstays can include a re-entry ban of three months to a year. Very long overstays (for years) can incur a ban for up to five years. Typical Reasons for Overstaying Besides a validity period (the time from the date your visa was issued or activated to its expiration date), every visa also has a limit on the number of days it allows the visitor to be in Turkey. For citizens of many countries, including European countries, the U.K., the USA, Canada, and Australia, an e-visa has a validity period of 180 days, and it allows the traveler to be in Turkey for a maximum of 90 days in any 180-day period. This is called the "90-in-180-days rule." If your visa goes past its validity period, or if you've been in Turkey for more than 90 days in the previous 180 days, you'll be in overstay status. Visas of other countries have a different validity period and number of days allowed in Turkey. Read you visa to learn the rules. Visa Overstay Fines If you stay in Turkey beyond the expiration date of your visa or remain for more days than it allows, you may be fined at the airport or other border gate when you leave Turkey. The calculation of your fine will depend on your nationality and the length of your overstay. The total fine amount consists of a penalty for the first month and additional months of overstay in U.S. dollar equivalents. There will also be a fee for a single-entry visa and the amount you would have paid for printing your residence permit card if you had applied for one (which you should have!). Here's what citizens of European countries, the U.K., the US, Canada, Australia, and many other countries can expect to pay. If you're not from one of these countries, the following should give you a general idea of what you can expect to pay. Overstay Fine Amounts First Month Overstay: $50 USD (equivalent) Additional Months Overstay: $10 USD (equivalent) per month Single-entry Visa Fee: ₺758.90 Residence Permit Card Printing Fee: ₺125 How the Fine is Calculated The fines for the first and subsequent months of overstay are self-explanatory. The Turkish government also charges a single-entry visa fee and a residence permit card printing fee, which are fees you should have paid if you had obeyed the law. It's also a way to ensure there's no financial incentive for foreigners to overstay their visas. Why You Must Pay a Single-entry Visa Fee The single-entry visa fee is paid during the residence permit application process by citizens of countries who have a visa exemption. Because you'll be in overstay status, you'll have no valid visa, so you'll have to pay for one as part of the penalty. You'll have to pay this fee no matter what kind of visa you used to enter Turkey, and even if you're visa-exempt. Why You Must Pay the Card Printing Fee If you'd followed the law and applied for a residence permit, you would have paid this fee. So even though you won't receive a residence permit, the Turkish government isn't going to let you get out of paying a fee you should have paid anyway. Thankfully, they don't also charge the residence permit processing fee, which is a much higher amount. Turkey Residence Permit Overstays and Fines The fee calculation works the same way with residence permit overstays. Once your residence permit expires, if you haven't applied for an extension, you'll have ten days to depart Turkey or pay a fine when you leave Turkey. Instead of Overstaying Your Residence Permit, Consider Leaving Turkey and Returning with a Visa If your residence permit expires, you can leave Turkey, buy an e-visa, and return the next day. After you return with your e-visa, you can apply for another residence permit. Turkey Re-entry Bans If you're caught by the authorities more than ten days after your visa or residence permit expires, you may be arrested, fined, deported, and even banned from re-entering Turkey for three months to a year. If you have an excessive overstay (involving years), you can be banned for up to five years. For short overstays over ten days, the Turkish police can be quite lenient. They may tell you that you must leave Turkey and take no further action. But don't count on it. Turning Yourself In If your overstay is an excessive one, it's much better to turn yourself in to the authorities than to get caught. Before you do so, it's probably a good idea to contact your country's embassy or consulate first, then let them arrange it. According to Article 9/4 of Law No. 6458, Foreigners and International Protection, if you turn yourself in to the authorities and make arrangements to leave Turkey before you get caught, your re-entry ban will be a maximum of one year. How to Know If You're Banned from Re-entering Turkey If you were banned, the immigration officials should have notified you about the ban and the duration of the ban. And just because you're able to get an e-visa doesn't mean your ban has been lifted. You'll still be stopped at the airport or border gate and sent back home. If you think you're banned from re-entering Turkey, contact a Turkish embassy or consulate and ask them to check your status. Having a Ban Lifted You may be able to have your ban lifted if you apply to a Turkish embassy or consulate and pay an application fee. The Turkish embassy or consulate will forward your application to the ministry of the interior in Ankara, who will decide if the ban should be lifted. If you were banned because of a failure to pay a fine, you must pay it at the Turkish embassy or consulate before you can do anything else. Be Polite and Respectful to Border Control Officials Some travelers have reported having overstays of several months, then after being polite and respectful to the border control officer involved, receiving a lower fine than they expected, without a deserved re-entry ban. On the other hand, some travelers have been angry and disrespectful, resulting in a higher fine and a re-entry ban. So when you're interacting with border control officials about your overstay, by all means, be polite! Opening a Turkish Bank Account Opening an Account for Your Residence Permit There's kind of a "catch 22" regarding bank accounts and residence permits, since you may need to deposit money into a bank account to get your residence permit, and some banks will ask you for a residence permit before they can open a bank account. Or they will ask for a utility bill in your name. You should be able to open a bank account with only your passport and a tax number. If the bank you go to tells you you need a residence permit or utility bill in your name, you can ask them to verify it with a manager, or if that doesn't work, go to another bank. If you have already applied for a residence permit, you can go to the immigration office where you submitted your application, and get a Yabancı Kimlik Numarası (Foreigner Identification Number, or YKN). This will be the same number that will be printed on your residence permit card when you get it. Since this will be your actual identity number as a foreigner in Turkey, the bank should accept it. Some banks, like GarantiBank, actively seek foreign accounts and have English-speaking staff. For others, you may need to take a Turkish friend along with you to open an account. Time Deposits You can deposit currency of most any type in a time deposit, or certificate of deposit (CD), for 30, 90, 180 days, or for one year. Interest rates will be a bit higher for the longer time deposits. If you need to withdraw your money before the maturity date, you can do so, but you will need to pay a fee. A time deposit might be in order if you have a short-term residence permit, which requires you to show that you have enough money to live on when you extend it every year. Instead of depositing money into a Turkish bank account and withdrawing again and again, you can keep the money in a time deposit, and use the account statement as proof of financial means each year. Exchange Rates, Interest Rates and Fees Exchange Rates If you plan to transfer a large sum of money to a Turkish bank, open one deposit account in Turkish Lira, and another in the currency of your home country. Transfer your money to the deposit account in the same currency type, then exchange it to Turkish Lira in Turkey. The exchange rate in Turkey will likely be a lot better than it is in your home country. If you want, you can keep an account in the currency of your home country, and even have time deposits in foreign currency to earn interest. Interest Rates If it's the highest interest rates you're after, check the websites in "External Links" to see what is on offer. Or you can visit or call various banks to check for yourself. When you inquire, make sure the interest rate they quote is their usual interest rate, and not a promotional one. Some banks offer higher interest rates for a month to get new accounts. After that month, the interest rate will drop back to their normal rate. ATM Machines In Turkish called a bankamatik, ATM machines in Turkey have an English option. If you are using a Turkish ATM to withdraw money from a bank account in another country, they will accept foreign debit and credit cards. However, each Turkish bank charges a different fee for ATM transactions in addition to what your bank charges. Try different ATMs at first to find the ones which charge the lowest fees. We have found that ATMs from IşBank and ZiraatBank to be some of the best ones. Home Mortgages Foreigners from any country can get a mortgage for a property in Turkey. Banks typically ask for proof of income for the previous three months, as well as documentation on any debts you have.   8. Some transactions, such as opening your first bank account in Turkey, require a tax number. Having and providing a tax number doesn't necessarily mean that you will owe taxes in Turkey. But having one is essential for getting certain things done, such as opening a bank account to deposit money, to prove you can support yourself financially, when you apply for a residence permit. To get your tax number, go to any local vergi odası, or tax office. Tell them that you want a vergi numarası, or tax number. Give the clerk your passport. They will enter your information into a database, then give you your tax number. This usually takes around ten or fifteen minutes. If you later become a legal resident of Turkey, you will be issued a kimlik numarası, or identity number, which will be printed on your ikamet tezkeresi, or ID card. Your identity number will then serve as both your identity number and your tax number. If you are applying for a residence permit, there may be circumstances where you need an actual yabancı kimlik numarası (YKN, translated "foreigner identification number). If you don't yet have your residence permit, you can get a YKN by going to the immigration office responsible for your area and applying for one.   9. If you've decided to live in Turkey and intend to apply for a residence permit, one of the first things you'll need is a vergi numarası (tax number). Having a tax number doesn't cause you to be liable for taxes. It's just a number to positively identify you whenever you make a financial transaction. What is a Tax Number? A tax number is a number used by the Turkish government to identify companies and individuals when they make financial transactions. Foreigners in Turkey may get a tax number by presenting their passport at their local İlçe Vergi Dairesi (District Tax Office). You'll also need a tax number to open a bank account, set up utilities for your residence, buy property, and pay property-related fees and taxes, among other things. How to Get a Tax Number Getting your tax number is probably one of the easiest transactions you'll have while in Turkey. Just take your passport and a copy of your passport's photo and information page to your local tax office. The tax office may be inside a larger complex called a Maliye (Finance Office). Take a number and wait, then when they call you, tell the person at the desk that you need a vergi numarası. Give them your passport and your passport copy. They'll know what you need and will give you your tax number on the spot. Once you get your tax number, record it in a place (like a document on your computer) or photograph it with your smartphone, so you don't lose it. How to Find Your Local Tax Office There's a tax office in every ilçe, or district, in every il, or province, of Turkey. To find the one in your district, search Google or Google Maps with the name of your district and the key phrase "vergi dairesi." You can also use the website of the Gelir İdaresi Başkanlığı, (Tax Administration) to find the nearest tax office. Here is the link you will need: https://www.gib.gov.tr/vdbd/vergi-dairesi-baskanliklari-defterdarlik-gelir-mudurlugu-ile-vergi-dairesi-adres-ve-telefonlari Select the province you're in from the drop-down list or click on it using the map. The tax office in that province will appear in a list below, along with their addresses and telephone numbers. Your Foreigner Identification Number When you receive your residence permit card, it'll have your 11-digit Yabancı Kimlik Numarası (Foreigner Identification Number, or YKN) printed on the front.   10. You, your spouse, and your children can become Turkish citizens with a fast-track program for foreigners who invest in the Turkish economy. You can apply for this program whether you're in Turkey or not, and even have someone with power of attorney make the application for you. You don't have to speak Turkish. You'll need to have the usual documents for an application for citizenship, and one additional document called a "Certificate of Compliance." The Certificate of Compliance The Certificate of Compliance proves you've met the investment requirements for citizenship. It's issued by the government ministry which oversees the type of investment you make. Once you make the investment and get the Certificate of Compliance, you submit it with the other documents in your citizenship application package. Mixing Investments You can make more than one type of investment and even transfer between them, provided the amount you've invested continues to meet the minimum standards. So, for example, you could invest in a house, and real estate investment funds, and venture capital funds, and government bonds, and put some cash in the bank, which all together meet or exceed the minimum investment amount for citizenship. Or you could invest everything into just one type of investment, such as a home. Value Fluctuation Every type of investment fluctuates in value. Some more than others. If the value of your investment later dips below the required minimum, don't worry. You won't have to add more money to it. The value of the investment(s) is required to meet the minimum required amount only at the time they issue the Certificate of Compliance. Methods of Investment, Amounts, and Who Issues the Certificate of Compliance Property (Real Estate) Buying property is the least expensive way you can make to become a Turkish citizen by investment. The minimum investment amount is the equivalent of $250,000 USD. The property must be appraised by a government-authorized appraisal company that issues a valuation report. The tapu (property title deed), must also have a notation that you won't sell the property for three years. The local land registry office will then request a Certificate of Compliance from the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization. Bank Deposits The minimum deposit amount is the equivalent of $500,000 USD. You must sign a declaration stating that you won't withdraw the money for three years. The Certificate of Compliance is issued by the Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency. Government Bonds The minimum investment amount is the equivalent of $500,000 USD. You must sign a declaration stating that you won't sell the bonds for three years. The Certificate of Compliance is issued by the Ministry of Treasury and Finance. Real Estate Investment Funds or Venture Capital Funds The minimum investment amount is the equivalent of $500,000 USD, into one or more mutual funds that primarily invest in real estate or in companies that are developing new products, services, or technology. You must sign a declaration that you won't sell your shares for three years. The Certificate of Compliance is issued by the Capital Markets Board. Fixed Capital Assets The minimum investment amount is the equivalent of $500,000 USD, into a company (or companies) for the purchase of fixed assets such as land, machinery, or other fixed assets. The purchase must be certified by a certified public accountant. You must sign a declaration that you won't withdraw your investment for three years. The Certificate of Compliance is issued by the Ministry of Industry and Technology. Providing Employment for At Least 50 Turks The Certificate of Compliance for this is issued by the Ministry of Labor and Social Security. To learn more about how to get a Certificate of Compliance, contact the ministries or agencies involved. Applying for Citizenship by Investment If you're in Turkey, make an appointment with the Nüfus ve Vatandaşlık İşleri Genel Müdürlüğü (Directorate of Population and Citizenship Affairs, or Nüfus) office responsible for the district where you live. You can make an appointment online at https://randevu.nvi.gov.tr/. If you're outside of Turkey, make an appointment at the nearest Turkish embassy or consulate. You can make an appointment online at https://www.konsolosluk.gov.tr/ Your Appointment During your appointment, you can fill out the required forms as part of a pre-application, and get more information on what investments, documents, and procedures are required to get a certificate of conformity from the relevant ministry. Required Documents You'll need to provide your identity documents, contact information, what type of investment you want to make, and fill out a form providing consent to access various records required to prove that you've made the required investment for citizenship. In general, the documents you'll need to take with you include: Application form, called an Exceptional Acquisition of Turkish Citizenship Application Form (VAT-4), downloadable from https://www.nvi.gov.tr/hizmetlerimiz/vatandaslik-hizmetleri/vatandaslik-formlari Passport Notarized copy of your passport including the photo and identity pages Notarized copy of your marriage certificate, if married Notarized copy of your divorce certificate, if divorced Notarized copy of death certificate, if widowed Notarized copies of documents showing the family relationship of any children Residence permit or work permit (if you have one) Notarized letter of consent for access to bank accounts, securities accounts, land registry records, etc. Certificate of Compliance, if you already have one, if you don't, the Nüfus can tell you what procedures are required to get one Other documents according to the type of investment, such as the title deed, bank receipts for the money transfer, etc. Receipt of payment for the application fee (can usually be made at the embassy, consulate, or Nüfus) To learn how to have a foreign document legalized with an apostille and translated for use in Turkey, see Apostille: What it is, How it Works and How to Get One from Turkey. Approval of Your Citizenship Once your citizenship application package has all the necessary documents and the embassy, consulate, or Nüfus has approved it, they'll send it to the Ministry of Interior, which will forward it to the Office of the President for final approval. Applications for citizenship by investment are fast-tracked, so you may receive your Turkish citizen ID card in 30 days or so, which is much faster than the usual processing time. Checking on the Status of Your Application You can check to see if your Turkish citizenship application has been approved by going to https://vatan.nvi.gov.tr/moduller/basvuru/basvurudurumbilgi.aspx. Just enter the Başvuru Numarası (Application Number) and the Doğum Tarihi (Birth Date) and perform the "Captcha" check, then press the enter button on your keyboard. Military Service of Children May Be Required One thing that may be a drawback for you is the status of your children. When you become a Turkish citizen, your children can become citizens as well. If they're under 18 years of age when they become a citizen, The Turkish government can call them for service in the Turkish military. Be sure to ask about this and get any answers they give you in writing. To learn about the military service obligation, see Turkish Citizenship and the Obligation to Serve in the Turkish Military. Dual Citizenship Turkey has no laws which prohibit dual citizenship. However, some other countries do.   11. Hello friends, I am curious about one question, in 2008, 1 USD was equal to 1.15 TL but now in 2020 1 USD is 6 Turkish Lira. Why is it so? I tried to do a research, at that time Turkish GDP was at 750 Billion $ and now it is 850 Billion $. The economy over time has increased the GDP but the Lira is going down. Why is it so? And if lira was almost equal to Dollar, is it possible now if corrective actions are taken in the monetary policy to get Lira back to its previous glory standing head to head with the dollar? If my sponsor doesn't have a job but rather savings and we put it in the bank to show for the interview, is there a certain amount of time it has to be in your account, or is it fine to show them on the day your balance and that's that? It means that, every month it pays extra money for my main account. 65 tl for months with 30 days. It is not a yearly vadeli and the advantage is that you could withdraw any time you want without fare (ceza) Please give me information.
  17. What Turkish bank is most likely to give me a real credit card as a foreigner? My Ziraat Bank card has the MasterCard logo on it but it does not work on n11.com it does not work at hepsiburada.com I can not buy bus tickets online I can not rent a car with it and it has a POS limit of 2000 TL per transaction which is much too low for me. I asked to have the limit increased and it does not seem to be possible at all. So basically this card is useless to me apart from minor POS purchases and getting cash from ATMs.

  20. I came to Turkey on a tourist visa and would like to get a residence permit for 2 year period for 'touristic purpose'. I'm currently 'unemployed' but I have more than sufficient funds for the 2 years period in my savings from my past work. On the residence permit application website, in the "Information on Income" step of the application process, I have declared the 'income status' and 'source of funds' based on my savings. However, I'm confused about the "Current occupation" part. Should I put it as my 'past profession/field' or as 'unemployed'? Would that affect my chances of getting a residence permit? Can anyone please suggest what needs to be done here? I'll be applying from Izmir.

After a lot of stress about the best way to send my 7500 USD to Turkey without incurring annoying EFT costs or the instability of shifting large amounts of money around to different countries banking systems, I decided i'd just go to the interview in Izmir with my foreign savings bank statement and if they needed me to notarise and translate it or send it to Turkish bank account, I could do that on the day or in the 30 days they would have given to get my documentation, But it turns out everything was fine and my interviewer spoke better English than I did and accepted my bank statements. So now I have my short term residence permit without needing a Turkish bank account to send money to and it was very easy! They did ask me about the Turkish bank account and I just said i'd had some difficulty opening an account currently (which was true) One thing I also voluntarily did was print out an everyday foreign bank account i used for free international debit card purchases that listed all of the places i'd shopped aka MIGROS, CAREFOUR, BIMS etc and explained that I used my foreign account for shopping, which could've helped them see that i didn't need a Turkish account. Additional tip: My health insurance was with SOMPO JAPAN and it cost me 209 TRY as a 30-35 year old, they had people standing outside the offices offering the insurance, however i bought it somewhere earlier.

  23. Recently at Ziraat bank in Urla / Izmir, I asked to take out 1000 EUR in cash from my EUR account. They asked me if I was sure because the fee to do this is 45 TL. Seems very high and I really expect to be able to take out my money for free ... not a fan of banks anyway. Can this be correct? I am planning to open an account with another bank because nobody at the Urla branch seems to speak any English whatsoever.
  24. Hi all, I would like to move to Turkey and my online freelancing income is enough to support myself in a cheap part of Turkey, but I don’t have a year of income saved up. The official requirements for self-employed people look complicated and seem to want me to have a registered company. My income is about $500 per month on average. Also, I have some wealthier relatives who could write statements of financial support and share bank statements if needed. Would that be accepted? I think I would apply for the 1-year tourism RP and live somewhere in the east. Thanks for any info you can provide!
  25. Hello everyone, I tried searching for this but I couldnt find a clear answer, so sorry if this has been asked already. I have my RP appointment in October, and I'm trying to sort everything out. It seems like I need to show that I have enough money in strictly a Turkish bank account, but ive been to three banks yesterday (HSBC, ING and Garanti) and they all said there is no way to open a bank account before getting the RP. Am I missing something here? How am I supposed to show that I have enough $$ for a RP in a Turkish bank if I cant open a turkish bank account without a RP? Are there specific banks that allow people to open an account before a RP? Someone told me that before people would just pay an exchange office to make a receipt for however much money was needed, is that still a viable alternative if I cant get a bank to open an account for me?
