  1. First I would like to say that this site is wonderful and I have learnt a lot from it. I am from California USA. My wife and I have decided to take early retirement by mid of next year (2020). Last year, we made a trip to Alanya and we loved it so much that we bought a one bedroom apartment on the beachfront in Mahmutlar. The building was still under construction and now it has been completed and ready to move in. Our real estate agent has already our tapu (property title deed) in our names. We are planning another visit in September (2019) and plan to apply for the 2 year residency permit for property owners. This site was instrumental in educating us on the process.. I submitted a request for a quote for private insurance from this site and received a quote from Selma. A few things still unclear to me: 1.) How much should I allocate for the residency fees. We both have US passports. 2.) How much do we need to show in our Turkish bank account for the 2 years. 3.) From your experience, since we already own our apartment with no rental expenses, what is a realistic monthly amount, we need for a comfortable life style with the assumption that we also buy a car. Appreciate your responses as it will help us plan for our retirement in the best way possible.
  2. Hi, I am Karim from Algeria. We are planing my ex wife, our two children of 7 and 5 and my self to move to turkey and start a new life there. I am looking for information concerning the cost of living in Izmir and would need advice, opinion from people who know the city or live there. If possible, i would like to have information about the monthly budget for food (local), rent, transportation cost and other ... About us: we dont, drink (maybe a beer once a month), dont smoke, we would like to go out and eat with family maybe once or twice a week, The flat: the flat should have 3 rooms, No international school, maybe a private Turkish school if not too expensive City of Izmir, no small villages around, preferably close to transportation thank you Ps: sorry for my English
  3. Hi all, I am trying to move to Istanbul about a year from now and I would like to know how much my husband and I will need to be making each month in Lira to live comfortably together. My husband is a smoker, but other than that our expenses would just be the typical stuff. Rent for a one bedroom apartment in a safe area of town (does not need to be big, fancy, or in the central city), groceries, internet, cell phones, utilities, public transportation, occasionally eating out or replacing old clothing.
  4. Hi! I'm trying to write a practical guide to present-day living costs for expats and summer vacationers in Turkey. As prices do vary from community to community, and have fluctuated quite a bit over recent years, I would love to have some input from expats in various communities and frequent travelers to Turkey. Whatever questions you can answer or prices you can fill in would be appreciated. Arianne ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Number of Members in Your Family: Retired Couple, Family with Kids, Single, Other: Live or Vacation in Turkey: City: Do you own a residence, rent a residence, or stay in a hotel? If you own or rent, is it a flat or a villa? What is your monthly rent? What is the typical monthly rent for a decent 2 BR flat in your community? Weekly rent for a 2 BR flat in summer? Typical Expenses: Weekly Groceries: Breakfast Out: Lunch Out: Dinner: Drinks: Bus or Subway Ticket: Taxi: Shuttle or Bus to Airport? Museum Entrance: Monthly Gas Bill (Summer): Monthly Electricity Bill (Summer): Monthly Water Bill (Summer): Monthly Phone Bill: Monthly Internet Bill: Is there anything unusually expensive about the community where you live? Any other [major] expenses not covered on the list?
  5. It is 48% cheaper to live in Istanbul than London. http://www.expatistan.com/cost-of-living/comparison/london/istanbul
  6. My name is Ty and I am currently looking for a job in Istanbul. I have a TESOL certificate, BA and one year ESL teaching experience plus tutoring English for two years at university. I am currently living in South Korea and I would like to work and live in Istanbul. I have been watching the job boards and even have applied to many jobs but I am not hearing much back. I will be patient. My question is about finding housing that is big enough for a family of 5 and living on what a teacher is paid. We now live in a two room apartment and we get by but it would nice to have a two bedroom apartment with a living room. What would something like that cost? Are there good and bad neighborhoods? Will schools be willing to help me or will they avoid me like the plague? I have also looked at last year's cost of living numbers and it seems very reasonable in terms of the price of milk, bread and the such. However, living in a big city will have different costs than a country's average cost. So, what is it like to live on the cheap in Istanbul? Any and all help will be welcome.
  7. Dear friends, as I have mentioned earlier I will be moving along with my girlfriend to Istanbul for an exciting new job in ITU university. I have been reading about the cost of life there and I am a bit confused. Some very good sites mention that life is less expensive compared to Athens (actually they say that it is 16% less). I will be earning 3250 TL and they will be providing also an apartment... Is this enough for two? My girlfriend will be seeking work but not on the first instant...thanks for all the answers
