  1. Hi everyone, Please I need a serious advice regarding the tax I should pay after purchasing a property in Istanbul. I got a website to see if I should pay tax, but when I login , always says there is no tax to be paid!!! I bought an apartment in Istanbul on the 03. October 2018, I bank transfer the money from outside to buy this property. 1- Recently I read that a foreigner could get back the 18% VAT for the first property !! Is it true and if so how I get it back? 2- I know I should pay some tax to the Turkish authority after buying my apartment (I have been to belediye but they could not understand me): - How I know correct how much I should pay? - I bought the apartment on 03.10.2018 from building company which is build it on 2017, How I can be sure that the building company has paid all the taxes regarding my apartment till the purchasing date which is 03.10.2018? I appreciate very much your quick answer.
  2. Hello Everyone, I am a property owner since October 2018,, I have a couple question would like to be answered to avoid any violation of the Turkish law. 1- I know I should pay a tax because I own a property in Istanbul: - where and when I should pay tax ( I bought the apartment last October ), is there only one type of tax or there is a several types should be paid? - Is the authority going to send me a bill to be paid or I should ask in order to get the bill? 2- Where I should pay the Earthquake insurance and when? Thanks and I appreciate all the replies.
  3. Hey all, I've read in previous posts but the posts too old. I want to import a car (2016 BMW 320d) that's a 2 liter turbocharged engine, to Turkey of course. I was wondering how much the costs of the import taxes, customs and all? EDIT: According to the following website (https://www.export.gov/article?id=Turkey-ImportTariffs) "Other products impacted by the SCT include petroleum products, motor vehicles, aircraft, vessels and durable consumer goods. VAT is imposed at the general rate of 18%, but reduced rates (8% and 1%) are applied on some goods and services, and certain types of transactions are tax exempt." I don't why, but I find it hard to believe. **Tip: when and if you open the website search for "vehicle" to easily find the statement I quoted. Thanks in advance!
  4. Is there any way I could retrieve my tax number? I had a student rp card and I have this card with me. But, I want to know my tax number before coming Turkey. Is there any website, like the one we get our T.C. number with the detail information we provide?
  5. Hi all, I'm sorry if this topic has been beaten to death, but I recently realized that I was very mistaken about filing taxes. I was under the impression that if you made less than a certain amount abroad, you weren't obligated to file taxes and would not meet any problems with the IRS. The truth is that the best thing to do is file a tax return every year to keep records, even if you owe no tax. In this way the IRS can only ever investigate up to 3 years back. So, if one day you have to pay fines or penalties, you've prevented a very serious situation by at least having filed a tax report every year. So, about my situation: I was contracted as an employee of a company based in the tax-free zone of Dubai Media City (the company has an office in Istanbul). I didn't pay taxes anywhere and I was considered an employee. Then, the company changed our contracts so that we would be considered "independent contractors." This happened mid-way through 2012. I filed a tax report in 2013 (for 2012) as an "employee," making approximately $20,000 per year. However, I now realize that if I'm ever asked to prove that by the IRS, they will undoubtedly find that I was actually working as an "independent contractor" and should have filed as "self-employed" (which, by the way, would require me to pay upwards of $3,000 in taxes...money that I definitely do/did not have)! Now I'm working for a new company under a similar premise. This means I do not pay taxes in Turkey, do not have a work visa, and should most likely be filing as a "self-employed" person abroad for 2013. I am exempt from normal taxes since I make under $95,000, but I still have to pay self-employment tax for earning a profit of over $400. Every month, I send most of the money I make in Turkey to a US account in order to pay my college loan, which runs me about $1000/month. The remainder I use for everyday expenses in Turkey, leaving me with nothing at the end of each month. I have no savings in Turkey and have barely ever saved any money since I moved here: it all goes to my loan (which I also claim on my tax return). I wouldn't really consider this tax evasion, since my loans are owned by the government, anyway!! So, the question is: am I going to wind up in serious trouble? What are the chances that I get flagged by the IRS? What do you guys do?
  6. Hello all it's been a while since I've been here hope everyone's doing fine. my question is bout living in turkey and paying taxes. I am an author who publishes ebooks online in the US and would like to know how that would work. would i be required to pay taxes in both places? Thanks in advance for your help. Rebekka
  7. Can anyone tell me how much the Government Tax is and the Environment Tax, when is it due and how do we pay it? I have been told that they have now been lumped into one payment. Thanks.
  8. This is relatively straightforward. You pay tax here on the 1st Jan and the 1st July, depending on the size of your car, the bill gets higher every year and this year it flew up. If you have bought a car, especially if it is second hand, make sure there is no outstanding tax debt on the car BEFORE YOU HAND OVER A PENNY. You will have been to the tax office to get your tax number before, so go back to the same place and as soon as you go through the door, straight ahead with a sign over it is M.V.T. Give the guys your ownership book, and ask them to check the vehicle tax is ok. Do this because I recently enquired and found the dealership i bought it from screwed it up and never paid the first tax from 3 years ago, to which i flame-threw them for. They were sorry and fixed it in a day. How quite i paid tax all this time and no one mention it was beyond me. So do check it because they do make mistakes. Once you have determined your bill for the car for the year, you can either the full year or the 6 months and then pay 6 months later again. Then just take your ownership book to the cashier who enters the car plate number, prints out the payment, hands it to the next guy and you pay it. Also don't be tempted to pay it online, I did the first time and the bank sent it to the tax office in Mugla, boy was that a job and a half tracking that money down and trying to explain it. If you don't pay on time they do charge interest, its not much but they will start upping it soon as so many are taking the mickey.Keep all receipts......
