  1. Wish I had found this site earlier. Found it while looking for Disko Hit. I was stationed in Izmir 1972-1974 in the Army, in the JSSG. I worked in the telephone central offices at Landsoutheast HQ and Disko Hit. Cant remember if I worked at Sirinyer in that time. Got to be kind of a blur. Other than a fishing trip to Lake Van and a visit to Sardis, I didn''t get far from Izmir. Did spend a lot of time at the NATO Rod and Gun Club and hunting in the area. Saw and did a lot of things there. Two years of my life I value very highly. I loved the people and the country. Worked with some inter
  2. Hello everyone. My husband is in the Air Force and just received orders to go to Izmir. I see that there have been a few other posts like this but they it looked like they were a few years old. I wanted to see what all you guys could tell me about having an assignment in Izmir; things to bring, housing, car info, etc. My husband is thinking about tradeing in one of our vehicles, before he goes, for a Jetta TDI that has a diesel engine. One of our questions is do they have diesel readily available at the gas stations over there? Another big question is how hard is it to find housing there
  3. I've just been alerted that the status of forces agreement between the Turkish government and the US military in Turkey has changed. US military retirees now have BX and Commissary privileges. I have verified this with a contact at Incirlik Air Base.
  4. Greetings from the United Kingdom. I am the creator of the Izmir and Turkiye DVDs from my earlier tours in Izmir (1995-97 and 2001-2002). I am a retired US military member and have accepted a job as a NATO Civilian at the HQs in Izmir, which is a three year contract. We are planning to arrive in Izmir in mid-November. As a NATO Civilian, I am not associated with the US military or US government and therefore do not have the type of support available that I had when I moved to Izmir as a military member. I am trying to sort out what that means particularly regarding my processing and arr
  5. I will be stationed there, arriving sometime next year. I have receive a welcome letter but words on paper can be very vague when trying to cover many topic. Living Accommodation: I know there's no base housing and will be living off post. Is there anything i should bring with me that will make life comfortable? I know furniture and some appliance are provided. How the driving over there? i will not be bringing a car with me. Is a tedious process to acquire a vehicle?
  6. Ken, is that the facility at the end of Sair Esref Bulvari? Or it it gone?
  7. Anyone have any info regarding this facility and what is available to retired military?
  8. Hello,I was at one time the Base Housing Officer for the 7241st ABG. My boss at the time was Walt Mullen who was Chief of Housing Management, I know Walt and his wife Julia are retired in Cesme but cannot seem to reach them on the numbers I have. I know that Jerry Burns took over as Chief of Housing at one point and was wondering if Jerry is still in Izmir? He was a friend of my Father who at one time was Chief of Supply in Izmir. For some reason I keep getting disconnected trying to dial the 011902324623720 number to Base Operator. Any help would be appreciated in answering my questions.
  9. Things don't look good for the base here, it may go away soon, possibly in November of this year. The word I get is that, since moving from the Akin Building, to the Hilton, then to Bayrakli, the unit may go away completely. Bayrakli is rented from three different landlords, and one of the leases is coming due in November. Near the site they're planning to open a Migros store, and this landlord is likely to ask an exhorbitant price for the land due to the changing situation. The Air Force is unlikely to pay it, and will probably pack up everything and go. So much for Bayrakli. A shame since a
  10. You got an assignment to Izmir? You're gonna love it. I'd say I envy you, but I live here. I was first assigned to Izmir back in '98, and loved the place so much I decided to retire here (in '99). I still live in Izmir, so I consider myself more qualified to tell you about it than whoever your sponsor is. I had a lot of misconceptions about Turkey before I arrived, and I was amazed at how misinformed I was. The only thing I knew about Turkey was from the movie "Midnight Express," a movie in which a lot of what was said about what actually happened was complete fiction. All of my conceptions

  12. Hi. I have pictures on this site taken when I was stationed in Izmir in 1970-71. I was wonderingif any "oldtimers" may have pictures of the former NCO club, Movie theater, and AAFES newstand, all ofwhich were located on Sair Esref Bulvari, not far from the (still around) BX. I know they are long gone, but would like to have pictures of them if they at all available. Know it's a long shot, but what the hey... Thanks in advance. Les Le Gearformer Sgt, USAFPS. My emaail address is [email protected]
  13. Hello folks,One step closer to living in Turkey. Got my orders. Made the reservations for travel. Will arrive Izmir 20 Jan. So much to get done still... Set up household goods shipments, ship vehicle etc. So far hassle free...we'll see if it stays that way. Roy
  14. Hi all, great forum here, love reading all the advice. I am in the military and coming to Izmir for a 1 year unaccompanied tour, my question is what are recommendations on electronics to buy in the U. S. and ship with my household goods and what is recommended to buy locally as I don't know the price differences. I am active military so will be able to shop at the PX if that matters. Three things:I'm thinking of getting an LCD TV over here before I go. any thoughts?alsoWhat about a GPS for a car? are there Turkish maps from Garmin? thinking about getting a GPS here also.alsodesktop computer,
  15. Nice day here in South Carolina today. Wife and I went and made a few purchases today for the things I will need while in Izmir, that we don't have multiples of: can opener, saute pan, etc. The move is less than 60 days away and the packing of household goods somethng less. Not to worried about getting everthing since all i have heard is that Izmir is very metropolitian and has everything a person might need. Well to the question. Any items that I should not forget to bring that are hard to find or non existent? Would be interested in hearing about the things ya'll miss from your home countr
