  5. Vicenza is a city in the Veneto region of northeast Italy. It’s known for the elegant buildings designed by the 16th-century architect Andrea Palladio. These include the Palladian Basilica and the Palazzo Chiericati, now home to an art gallery. Nearby, also by Palladio, the Teatro Olimpico replicates a classic outdoor theater, indoors. On the outskirts of town, the hilltop Villa La Rotonda has 4 identical facades. 6. I own 2 x apartments on Mirage Residence complex in Side, Turkey ... one I live in ... the other one I rent to a Brain Surgeon/Doctor from the local Bilgi Hospital. 9. THE 26th ASPENDOS INTERNATIONAL OPERA AND BALLET FESTIVAL WILL TAKE PLACE in September this year ... from 1st to 18th September. It is a unique occasion to enjoy the world's best classic repertoire in likewise best-preserved ancient amphitheatre. The festival was established on a national level in 1994 and acquired international status in 1998. In 2003, the British Independent Newspaper gave it the 5th position among the world's ten most respectable festivals of that kind. One of the reasons for its popularity is the unique location. Aspendos amphitheatre was constructed back in the 2nd century A. D. when the city was under the rule of the Roman Empire. Its creator—a famous Roman architect Zeno—used only top quality calcareous stone. During the reign of Seljuks, the theatre was turned into a palace, and reinforced with bricks. After all, Turkey deserves to be given the proper credit for the excellent conservation of the theatre that remains functional till modern days. Aspendos is located in Antalya Province, four kilometres north off Serik, and only 38 kilometres from Antalya itself. Here is the link to the official website of the Festival, its program and list of ticket offices. It is also posible to buy tickets online. https://www.operabale.gov.tr/aspendo.../anasayfa.aspx This is the programme for 2019 = September 1-2 : Carmen (opera), September 8: Swan Lake (ballet), September 12-13: Aida (opera) September 16: Troy (epic opera) September 18 : Gala-Concert September 12-13: Aida (opera) September 16: Troy (epic opera) September 18 : Gala-Concert x Angela in Side x

  12. Yes, Konyaalti may be a nice looking beach but I would never venture there again because the last time I swam there, both my feet were bleeding badly from the the very sharp shingle ... no wonder they were selling Jelly Shoes everywhere. And I was not the only one who had bleeding feet. There was a small child about 3 or 4 years old crying her eyes out whilst her mother attempted to console her. Blood all over the place and trails of it all along Konyaalti Beach. It seems odd to me that only a 50-minutes drive from there is Side (pronounced See-Day) which has the 2nd longest soft sandy beach in Turkey, alongside the longest promenade in the Mediterranean It is also home to the Apollo Temple which is where Anthony and Cleopatra fell in love; nowadays many weddings take place there at sunset which is when the sun beams through the Apollo Temple's pillars; a lovely spot for a wedding. If you are there at sunset, extend your arm with the palms facing upwardws and open... then the sun will settle in the palm of your hand like a small shiny balloon. It makes great photos! Please don't misunderstand me ... I do love Antalya and often go there for a day out from Side for a change. I like its interesting museums, the many big shopping centres, Old Town Kaleici with its super architecture and atmosphere, great choice of restaurants and I like the harbour area too. From there you can take a boat trip to one of my favourite places ... Duden Waterfall Park... the entrance fee iws 10 TL per person. It has several waterfalls and good pathways between them. There is also a lovely cave overlooking the biggewt waterfall and you can peek through and take photos from there. Wear sturdy, waterproof shoes though as there are deep puddles throughout that cave. Just outside Duden is a very nice restaurant offering good food and equally good measures on their drinks. Sit outside at one of the tables and you will be able to reach out and actually touch the waterfalls. But what I don't like about Antalya is the traffic, the noise, the general hustle and bustle of the place that never seems to stop and take a breath. This to me outweighs all of its good points and I would never wish to live there but for a day trip it's a super place to visit . I go there every Sunday to the 11am mass which is in English with guitars and singing. It's called St Pauls Cultural Centre and is in the heart of Kaleici. It is above a coffee shop and is run by an American priest. After the service, we all gather below and have a coffee - perhaps a cake too - and a good old chin wag! The church is a Christian one - not Catholic, Presbytarian, Baptist, just general Christian. I have taken a few of my Muslim Turkish friends to the 11am mass as they were interested to see what a Christian service was like. They sat at the back of the church with headphones on for the translations and they were all impressed and said they had enjoyed the experience. St Pauls do not just have the 11am mass but severeal other events too. Take a look at their calendar here ... https://www.facebook.com/pg/spccturkey/events/?ref=page_internal All in all, I am more than happy to live in Side Ken ... why have you not given that some consideration? You seemed to like it a lot when I met you there a few years ago ... Angela x

  17. Ah ha Diane! So ... There is a very famous poem by an anonymous writer who explains that different people come into our lives to serve different purposes. Many of us can meet people in our lives and we might not be aware of why they have arrived or left, and it could take us a while to realise this. People who have read this poem find it inspiring because it ultimately means that even if someone has left our life, it can have a positive influence in our lives and not one that is only negative. Below is the poem below. After you’ve read this, pick a few different people in your life and find out whether they are a Season, Reason or a Lifetime.

  24. Not such good news unfortunately ... George is in fact still in Alanya Close Prison ... for a total of 5 years ... I cannot seem to find out why they extended his stay there, or indeed why they chose to put him in the Close Prison instead of the Open Prison in Alanya. George has written to me 4 x times to date and all very positive. He says the food there is very good and so is the extensive library. He tends to love reading and is doing so for 8 to 10 hours each day now. It took 6 months for him to get my first letter to him in prison because they had to hire a translator as, of course, I wrote it in English ... so he has replied to me in Turkish and has asked that I do so in future also ... which I have done and then he gets the letters immediately. Never thought about this before he mentioned it but it does make sense I guess. Why they decided to put him in the Close Prison and not the Open Prison is anyone's guess. But if he is a "Good Boy" then he will be transferred to the Open Prison in any case. There are no time restraints on this transfer ... just wait and see ... x Angela in Side x
  25. We had a very unfortunate incident yesterday at my complex of Mirage Residence. The local black and white cat jumped into the electricity box and frazzled herself to death, at the same time knocking out all the electricity on the site. The cat was taken away - luckily I did not see it myself but my next door neighbours from Norway did and they said it was not a pretty sight - and we were without electricity or computers because of course they use a Modem - for 6 hours. We had to get the Electricity Board to come in as our electrician was not allowed to touch the official electric box. He came as well and between them, we finally had the electric back on. I did not realise just how much I rely on electricity, especially for use of my laptop, but am fully aware now and so glad to be able to switch the lights on and have a cuppa from my electric kettle! x Angela in Side x
