Walled Obelisk, Hippodrome, Sultanahmet, Istanbul
Constantine VII restored this obelisk and covered it in bronze plaques coated with gold, depicting the victories of his grandfather, Basil I. Unfortunately these were plundered during the fourth crusade and melted down. Later, Ottoman Janissaries (the Sultan's personal guard) would climb it as a test of courage, which caused further damage.
