Church of the Pammakaristos

This splendid, scarcely-visited Byzantine church in Istanbul served as the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate until the late 16th century when it was turned into a mosque, called the "Victory Mosque" by Murat III to commemorate his conquests of Georgia and Azerbaijan. It is rich with Byzantine mosaics mosaics of Christ and the saints, set in a background of gold.
