I'm sure this has been posted before, but I just did a search and came up empty handed. I've read that there are some banks which expats can open bank accounts at if they don't have a residency permit. However, some posts I've read seem to conflict with other posts. Are you req'd to show proof of employment and/or residency when requesting a bank account? I'm not interested in some over-sized bank (like HSBC). A simple account without silly fees is all I would need. Thanks.

Ok, to open a bank account you will need a Tax number which is easy to get by just walking into your nearest Tax office, that's the easy bit. By law to open a bank account you should have a Residents Permit but this being Turkey and depending where you will be living they don't always ask for it, but they will definately ask you for your Turkish tax number.

I can't advise which would be the cheapest bank with regard to charges as it depends on how much money you put in, maybe others will advise you tomorrow. :)

A friend of mine opened a bank account recently and for some reason they thought that she was an American so she had to sign a form saying that she didn't have an American bank account. I tried to check this out but the people in the bank didn't know why.

I was told that Fortis will not open a bank account without a residence permit. On the other hand Akbank, Garanti Bankası, etc will open a bank account no problem with just a passport and tax number. I opened my first account with Akbank even without an address when I first came to Turkey.

You don't need to be resident in Turkey to have a bank account, but you do need proof of address, and that address can be outside Turkey, at least that is what the Akbank staff told me in June.

Sorry about that, I was told the law had changed recently, so I must have been given wrong information about the Resident Permit being a requirement.

I opened a bank account last September with Akbank just a passport and tax number without even giving my address because I didn't have one. However, about May or June of this year I went to withdraw money from my account and Akbank wouldnt give me the money as I needed proof of address in the form of my residence permit. I also opened an account with Garanti in July of this year without proof of address, I just gave them my address and it was accepted without question.

Ok

I opened my bank account today with YapiKredi.

All I needed was a Passport, RP Ikamet and your Yabanci kimlik no.

As usual it depends who you are and where you are. Yapi Kredi will give you a credit card if you let them block an amount equal or slightly more than your credit limit.

This is no longer valid. The rules have changed and foreigners no longer require a tax number to get a bank account. After you live in Turkey for 6 months you can call or otherwise contact your local foreign police branch and they can give you your Foreigner's turkish ID number. Or, you can look it up yourself. Go to : https://tckimlik.nvi...SorguModul.aspx and type in the number of your residence permit, and you can retrieve your " Yabanci T.C. Kimlik No " that you can use in many contextst. Yay!
