Hi,
I am 33 and my partner is 35 and we have a 7 year old son and another on the way. We are seriously considering moving to the Didim area and really would just like to talk to anyone that lives out there. Also if anyone knows of schools that would be available to our children.
Am obviously quite worried about moving from England and want it to be the right thing to do but would just appreciate some much needed advice about living abroad.
Thanks,
Zoe.

Welcome to our forum Zoe. I don't live in the Altinkum Didim area but I have lived in Turkey for 20 years and love it.
I'm sure someone who lives in the area will be along soon to answer your questions.

Hi Zoe and welcome to our forum. Is your partner Turkish if not I would be rather worried about coming over here to live as you are both too young to retire and wonder how you will fill your days. As you have another baby on the way you will obviously have your hands full looking after the children. If you have done your research you will know that it is very difficult to get a work permit, yes people do work here illegally but it's not worth the risk as they can and will deport people they catch.
Have you got a home to go back to if it doesn't work. My main concern would be your son, yes there is schooling in Didim but your son may get behind if you send him to a local school as he will have to learn Turkish, so it will be a struggle for a while until he picks it up.
I wish you the best of luck as it's a difficult decision to make.

If you don't get a suitable answer here, I'm going to be traveling to Altinkum in the next few weeks, so I can ask your questions to some of the locals.
If you would send me a personal message (PM), I can get back to you personally regarding this issue.

Hi Zoe..
Its great to hear that your thinking of moving out to Turkey. We began visiting Didim some 7 years ago and loved it so much we decided to buy an apartment in the middle of town on a small development called Sezgin Complez. The purchase was co-ordinated by Albatross Estate Agents on Altinkum front. It all happened in 48 hours which shows how slow we are in the UK. At this point I must emphasize the importance of using a solicitor and translater. I could go on for hours but to cut a long story short, we have recently had a villa built just outside Didim on a place called YesilTepe (Green Hill) by Forever Homes (Fantastic Company and very highly recommended!)
(See our small video!)
Turkey could take some getting used to and I would advise that you holiday there first, maybe then buy a small apt and then if you are completely sure of the place and the way of life buy something or build something more permanant. The summers are very hot... 48degrees this year in August and the winters are cold at night but warmer by day than the UK.
Investing your money in a Turkish bank can be a bonus as the interest rates are currently between 8 - 10 percent.
I am not sure of the schools but I am told they are pretty good and English children do settle quite well, but check with someone with children first.
There is a very large Ex-pat community in Didin/Altinkum now, so you would always have people to help you and guide you through any complications, as we did.
Good luck
Kevin
