Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone can help? Me and my friends are going to instanbul soon and we have been recently told by someone that you can't wear scarves in museums and places like Yedikule Castle, Topkapi Sarayi and any other palaces and castles.

I am a muslim and like to wear my scarf, it would be a real disappointment for me if this is the case as I am really looking forward towards my holiday.

Please let me know

Thank you

Hi Coffee,
I don't think you'll have a problem wearing a scarf in Istanbul, or why you'd have a problem in tourist places like palaces and museums.

Have a great holiday.
Sue.

As far as I'm aware headscarves are only forbidden in Government buildings.

yes sunny is right, however some museums are considered to be "government buildings". but i think a solution must have been introduced as there are hundreds of arab tourists nowadays in istanbul most women with scarves and even with the black dress from head to toe. and i have not heard any incident. I dont think they're changing their costumes to visit topkapi.

As far as I know the government has privitised, or will privitise Topkapı Sarayı, however, Topkapı also holds a number of religious artifacts including belongings of the Prophet Muhammad and under no circumstances will you be asked to remove your head covering.

The only problem I could imagine may be Dolmabahçe Sarayı, which is owned by the Turkish Parliament rather than the Ministry of Tourism, but again, I don't think it's likely.

Just to thankyou all for your reply, I kind of have a better understanding of the situation. Hopefully all goes well. Its my first holiday so I am kinda getting paranoid over every little thing  lol.

But Turkey looks like a beautiful place and I am really looking forward to my holiday. IA
