Please correct me if I am wrong. My understanding is that residency for non retires and residency for retired people is much the same. Ie. it costs the same, has the same time limitations of maximum 5 years and the same need to show the necessary financial resources.

I think I am right in that the one thing which is different is having residency as a retired person allows for the importation of a motor vehicle.

Yes?

I am aware that should I bring a vehicle I would need to leave a certain amount in a certified account as some sort of bond. This is fine. I can draw the interest.

Again, please correct me if I am wrong.

So to a question. What is needed for the Turkish State to recognise me as retired? The essential question is this, will they recognise me as retired if I take my occupational pension early, well before I am entitled to take my state pension? Or, put another way, if I retired from work and draw my NHS pension, is this sufficient to be recognised as retired?

Thanks in advance.

If you look at this link you will see what is required for a retired person to import a car.

Very good questions to which I don't know the answers at the moment. I will do some research.

Thanks Sunny,

There seems to be a uncertainty around this, and maybe some people getting residency as retired people on Occupational Pensions and others being refused until able to claim State Pension.

I have just spoken to the Consul and he says the Turkish Government will only recognise the official UK Government retirement documents, and will not recognise early retirement with a private pension.

Which still leave the grey area, of state occupational pensions. There is the state pension we get at 65 or so. There is also the civil service pension (run by the state) which can be taken earlier. Same goes for the military. Then there are things like teachers pensions, NHS pensions, police pensions, and the like, which are functionally state administered. Given an NHS pension is state administered through the NHS Pension Agency essentially the Department of Heath is saying I am retired. Grey area?

<edit>

Oh, and sorry. Should have said.

Sunny, thanks.

I will check again but I'm pretty sure that the consul was referring to the state pension.

I am retired and started drawing my private pension last year, aged 50. I had my company pension details translated and notarised, and my residency permit (ikamet) shows that I am retired (emekli).

In August 2009 I drove my car from UK to Turkey with the intention of keeping it here. In January 2010 I drove it back to the UK. My advice is don't bother.

Having said that we did have two superb driving holidays.

Thanks. That's very interesting. We're certainly hoping to get emekli on our permits when we get that far (still in the UK).

We've ridden out to Turkey on the Harley, but that was just for a holiday. It was a wonderful ride.

May we ask why you drove back?

It's a long story, but briefly it came down to the fact that a right hand drive car was not deemed to be 'roadworthy' in Turkey. The car itself was in perfect condition, by the way.

Looking back, I am not too upset. Now I think it through, there are long term issues with importing, which you tend to ignore when you bring the car out.

I am happy to discuss our experience with you. You can contact me through my website - Kalkan Turkish Local News.
