A project in progress in the Aegean resort town of Datça has changed the lives of 10 women and their families who immigrated to the town from southeastern Turkey.

A handcrafts center, which was established eight years ago by the local Governor’s Office within the scope of an employment project, is helping the women contribute to their family budgets.

I have been visiting Datca for so many years and yet have not found this centre. I see it is in Eski Datca which is a village a few km's away from Datca itself and I have often wandered around it. It's an old Greek village and very pretty. I have not actually seen any adverts for it in the main town either. I shall make more of an effort to find it when I'm out in a couple of weeks.

I hope you manage to find it JK as it would be nice to get a first hand report.

Well the village it's in is quite small and there are a couple of shops selling fabric things so it must be one of those. I'll take some photos and maybe buy a couple of things. I love traditional furnishings and am gradually filling my house with them! I am involved in a project on another forum supporting women and children in the east of Turkey in memory of a friend who died so I will be very interested to find this centre.

I found the shop and don't know why I had not noticed it before. The ladies there were lovely and I told them I had read about them on the internet. They didn't speak English and were so delighted when I spoke to them in my terrible Turkish. I bought quite a few things there, silk scarves and woven wall hangings. The prices were very reasonable which makes a change in Datca. One of them was expecting a baby soon so I said I would return to see the baby. Well worth a visit if you ever go to Datca.
