Hello folks,

One step closer to living in Turkey. Got my orders. Made the reservations for travel. Will arrive Izmir 20 Jan.
So much to get done still...Set up household goods shipments, ship vehicle etc.

So far hassle free...we'll see if it stays that way.

It looks like I will be in Izmir for a week in Jan or Feb for depending on certain developments in Izmir for the office I support.

Maybe I'll see when I'm there.

We'll get togeather and figure how to get more miltary/civilians on the site for even more stories and advice on coming to Izmir. My position is AF Services Director for Izmir.

Lots of driving today. But another step in the move accomplished. I went down to Charleston today to ship the car. Pretty smooth operation at the port. My only problem was I misfigured the gas. The instructions clearly stated no more than 1/4 tank of gas. Well when i arrived nearly 1/2 left. So I have two options: Drive around till down to a 1/4 or go just down the road and pay a guy to defuel the tank and keep the gas. Time is short since we have to be back to drop a car off at the airport for a friend returning from Iraq. I go pay the shop $25 to take it out. My own fault but time is short.

Anyway the car is headed to Turkey. Projected arrival date 3 Feb.

New TomTom GPS worked flawlessly. I'll get the maps for Turkey downloaded and be set to explore Izmir and more.

Well it's less than 3 weeks till take off. Another step in the process coming Tuesday. Movers are coming to pack and ship unaccompanied baggage. I have been setting aside items to bring and decieding what to leave behind. Spent a couple hours Saturday going through the closet sorting and discarding clothes. Took two big sacks to the salvation army, didn't realize I had that many clothes I haven't worn in some time.
I had a quiet Christmas, My son his wife and my two grandaughters get in Monday evening so things will liven up then. They spent Christmas in New Mexico with her grandparents, I couldn't complain since hey spent the last 7 here with me.
Looking forward to meeting some of you face to face soon after my arrival in Izmir and through the year to come.

Roy

Me too. I hope everything goes well for you, unfortunately I won't be in Izmir when you get there, but Bushman will, he's lived in Izmir longer than any other expat that I know of. I'm sure he'd be happy to meet up for a beer and give you the "unofficial" newcomer's briefing! :beerchug[1]: As I know I've I've said before, I think you're really going to enjoy living in Izmir.

Roy, enjoy the clearing out of unused belongings and clothes, I did the same thing 8 years ago and I learnt a good lesson - never again will I be a hoarder! The local charity shops loved me and I'm sure they're probably still selling some of my stuff as there was so much of it.

You're so going to love it here :beerchug[1]:

Another piece of the move complete. Received my passport back with visa for entry into Turkey. Only small pieces left but nothing that will stall the process. Plane tickets, packing, dentist visit, etc., easy stuff.

On another note.....BURRRRRRR it's cold here in South Carolina, 4th night in a row with lows in the teens, high only 36F. Looking on the web at Izmir weather, looks like it's more pleasant there than here.

Anyway, see all soon!

Good luck with your move Roy. Today I was in Izmir, it was quite mild & pleasant, although overcast. Twice I walked past a sign showing the temperature, The first time 23C, 2nd time 25C -- I was sure it must be wrong, however the date and time were showing correct. It WAS rather warm, although most people (including myself) were wearing coats/jackets.

I can't believe it was correct ! If it was, it's surely another sign of global warming (?).

Thanks to all for the well wishes. I'm excited about this adventure.

Global warming or not, these last few day have me ready for warmer, milder weather. South Carolina is normally milder than now just one of those cold snaps that come along. Almost all of the states are experiencing this one. Could be worse I could be up north where it's really cold and snow is on the ground.
