Someone told me its a legal requirement to have deprem sigorta, I wasn't aware of it. I had this strange idea that any buildings insurance would cover it. Wrong. Btw anyone got contents insurance?

Earthquake insurance is called DASK and in Istanbul it's compulsory, don't know about anywhere else. In addition I purchased both structural and contents insurance from Intasure since DASK only covers the cost of clearing away the rubble.

Thanks Ben, that was quick. Can you give a ballpark figure regarding the cost of both of them?

Of course quick - I'm a sportswoman :dance[1]: It cost me about 56 TL for the DASK. The private insurance I believe was something in the £110-120 region because I opted for a low contents insurance (I hire a safety deposit box in the bank to put small valuables) and an option where you pay a certain amount of contribution towards structural damage and this makes the structural insurance cheaper.

Both DASK, and house ins. depend upon the sq. meters of your property. The contents ins. depends upon your valuation, and level of cover. There are plenty of local ins. companies that offer insurance, plus most banks.

The reason he 'has got away with it' is because , as you say no one tells and no one checks up. You find out when there is an earthquake and the ordinary insurance company won't pay out anything because you haven't got DASK!!

Oh gosh, really? I would have thought that everyone would be made aware eg like having to have motor insurance. As far as I know, the tapu is registered at some state bank and they know when the DASK is due. Mine is mid October I believe.

DASK is compulsory, the way it is enforced is to require evidence of it when applying for your Iskan. As Benhalterci says it doesn't cover much and if you want to have your house rebuilt getting separate insurance is necessary.

DASK is compulsory

That's correct and in fact you are unable to sell a property unless it's covered by DASK.

Thanks Dande, an interesting point not that I'm in any rush to sell. Aren't you glad I brought this topic up?

Well we use Ak sigorta and in the past used KocAliaze (?). I've no reason, so far, to think them as anything but reliable.
