You can open your own photo gallery on Turkey Central. One of the main problems members have is that they try to upload HUGE digital photos, like the size of a living room wall, and the galleries will reject this. So you may need to re-size them down to around 800 x 600 pixels if possible. It will take larger ones, but not too large.

If you are a new member who hasn't made two posts yet, you won't be able to open a gallery. We do this because not everybody who first joins Turkey Central has good intentions, so by requiring a couple of posts first, it helps us check people out a little first. Believe me, it's necessary.

Here's a tutorial for creating your own photo album.

1. Click on "Gallery" in the navigation bar.

2. Get right to it by clicking "Upload." It will take you through the process of setting up a gallery if you don't already have one. If you do, you will be able to select the gallery you've already set up (see the last example image if you already have a gallery).

3. Click "New Album."

4. Give your album a name, and select the parent album, which will give you the single option of selecting "Member Galleries." Decide on how you want your photos sorted. I would suggest that you also select "Use Detail Mode" because if you don't, the thumbnails will be very small.

5. I know this is redundant, but you have to select "Member Galleries" again. This option is for forums which have more than one parent album for members. We only have one, so there is only one option.

6. Now you can browse for your photos. By default, there is a one-at-a-time photo selector.

7. You can also use the advanced uploader, if you have the correct version of Flash installed on your computer. You can download the latest version of Flash at www.adobe.com if you need to. With the advanced uploader you can upload multiple photos directly from your computer by holding down the Control key and selecting them. It will look like this if you click on "Try our advanced uploader":

8. If you're using the advanced uploader, hold down the control key and click to select those photos you want to upload. Then click "Open" or the equivalent on whatever computer you're using.

9. You'll then see your photos uploading. I uploaded two photos for this example. Below you can see one photo is almost finished uploading, and the second is pending.

***NOTE: If you get an error, while uploading, it is probably because one of your images is over 1 MB (one megabyte). Nobody should be uploading any photo anywhere near 1 MB, but modern digital cameras can take a photo the size of a large wall poster. Please reduce the size of your photos and optimize them if you can. All computers these days ship with photo editing software, so if you have a huge photo, you can at least reduce the dimensions. 800 x 600 pixels is what I reduce my photos to. The gallery will accept larger photos, but there has to be a limit.

10. Once they're uploaded, click "Review and Publish." This will give you a chance to give them a final review and add some additional info.

11. Here's the Review and Publish page. You can set a photo as the "cover" photo for your album, add a title, tags to help search engines find it, and also add a description.

Posted Image

12. Once you're satisfied with that set of photos, click Finish and Publish.

13. And here you have it, your photo gallery!

*** Just as a tip, there is one thing which is not very intuitive. At some point you may end up at the "Gallery Selector." If you are looking for your photo gallery, be sure to click on "Your Albums" and not on the galleries shown to the right. Otherwise you'll be taken into the master galleries and not to the the gallery you're probably looking for. You can also access your galleries in your control panel (click on your forum name at the upper-right of any page).

If you have any problems with the gallery, please post your problem in this topic or in this forum. I subscribe to this forum so I'll be back to reply to you. Your question, and my reply might help somebody else if you post it here rather than sending me a PM.

Yes, sorry, there have been some changes, since we've upgraded a few times and I haven't had the time to re-do everything here.

I went in under a regular member profile and tried to open an album, and I see what you mean now. It isn't very intuitive. I'll put together a new tutorial today.

Hey Khaethe, I think I fixed the problem. I also updated the tutorial. Please let me know if you have any problems from now on.

And thanks for posting that, I always think that for every person who tells me about a problem, there are ten more who had the same problem but didn't tell me about it.

thanks Abi and Cukurbagli

Abi although it's always nice to have company don't be too hasty in putting yourself in the same category as me.

I thought I was alone in my dimness until I saw those motorway signs that say "Wrong way, turn back" and figured they hardly made them just for me, Now I get a warm fuzzy feeling each time I pass one because I feel closer to my people.

I apologize for the delay in looking in to this problem, I did see your post but got distracted by other things... my fault.

For some reason, the permissions for the member galleries was set so that members couldn't access them. I don't know how that happened, but it did, and I have fixed them.

The photo galleries are set up with categories for Member Galleries, Cities and Towns, and Archaeological Sites. The Member Galleries category is what you need to access. They are displaying properly now.

The Cities and Towns galleries and the Archaeological Sites galleries are for photos strictly about those places, they're restricted because most member galleries have photos of a variety of things (like a holiday or a trip throughout Turkey) and tend to be more personal in nature. The Cities and Towns Galleries and the Archaeological Sites galleries are intended to be kind of a "photo bank" specifically about those places only. Those galleries were the only ones being displayed until you alerted me.

Thanks for reporting this, I'll send you a PM to follow up, if you have any more problems let me know, I'll be better about acting promptly on this in the future!
