Hello All,

I am a Black Sea food junky. Muhlama, black cabbage sarma, cornbread, hamsi bread, laz boregi.... I could keep going.
Anyway, I read this really good review of a little dive restaurant in Beyoglu called Pera Sisore on a blog called www.istanbuleats.com
great place, great food, great price!

Thank you for that information Istanbulac I'm sure some of our Istanbul members will be interested and maybe pay the restaurant a visit.

Hello Istanbulac,
Welcome to the forums, enjoy!.

Talking about food in blacksea region means,
talking about, cabbiage, corn, potatoes and hamsi,

My word, what wouldn't they do with them; I mean,

Cabbage; Cabbage soup, staffed cabbage, boiled and stir fried cabbage, pickeled cabbage, cabbage casserole(a dry dish)..
Corn; corn flour(used in all soups and to fry things), crashed corn(in almost all dry dishes), corn on the cob,( boiled and barbecued in every household when the season comes) and "muhlama or kuymak"- It's more like thick Béchamel sauce made with local triditional cheese becomes stringy when melted like mozzerella and cooked with butter, corn flour, milk or water.. Cooking it not as easy as it sounds, it has technique and measure to make it success..(and yummy for eating in breakfast, diping in with bread), shouldn't forget all sorts of corn breads also made with vegies and hamsi..

Potatoes standard way of cooking..

Hamsi fish; (famous to the region); steamed, baked, fried, casseroled, pickled, omeletted with corn flour and doner kebabed.(not joking)

That's how my mum says it used to be and how in those days they were stranded to few vegies they could only grow there..

Now thanks to the science and development...We can even grow kiwi out there..

So wait for few more years and see what they will do with kiwi? not only kiwi, a few more tropical fruits are advancing there).
Mum is already enjoying kiwi soups by the way...

There is so much to write about black sea region...the nature of people, culture, music, folklore, dancing and their living.

And you know, every country probably has some type of people of their own making jokes and picking about...
and here in Turkey we make some of those most hillarious and craking jokes about the "laz" people live in Black sea region...
Those of you living as expats may have heard about our "Temel and Fadime" :swoon2[1]::):uhm[1]: already making me laugh.

But despite all jokes about them. I must admit some of the nicest and most sincere people are always coming from Black sea region..
We had many strong politicans and prime ministers coming from blacksea region..Our current prime minister is from the city of Rize..

We are going to Trabzon in May and Istanbul in June...I hope to be able to try some of this lovely sounding *nosh* while we are there!!! I make cornbread from a Turkish recipe...would like to see how the treal thing compares to mine. Thanks for the tip on the website....Addie

Istanbulac - that restaurant is right near where I live - I live in Asmahlamescit .
