Another international medical success could be in the making as doctors at Akdeniz University Hospital prepare for an embryo implant in September for Derya Sert, who was the first woman in history to have received a womb from a deceased donor, and is the world’s first successful uterus transplant patient.

The world’s first successful uterus transplant was conducted by a team of doctors at Akdeniz University Hospital in the southern province of Antalya on Aug. 9, 2011. The 22-year-old woman, who was born without a uterus, was successfully implanted with a uterus without any major complications. The operation was performed by Dr. Ömer Özkan, a professor from the plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery department of Akdeniz University’s School of Medicine, and his team at the same university
