HI Everybody

We are to retire in Turkey in late September and will be driving there with our 2 small poodles

Our plan is to get rid of everything we own in the uk and rent a home out there

Can members give us their LIST of the items we should bring and not bring

We know all the paperwork we need to bring

Thanks once again for all your help

Things I'm glad I brought we me were good quality cutlery plus pots and pans. If you buy decent quality of either items here they are very expensive compared to the UK, A good quality electric blanket for the winter. Also as you have dogs if you give them dogs treats, they are very expensive here so bring a couple of kilo's with you. I can't think of anything else at the moment but will add them as they come to mind.

Siily things that are difficult to find here like a garlic crush or a decent potato masher. Any good brand electric goods like blender, mixer, electric kettle etc. (I can't count the number of kettles I've gone through, have now given up and boil water in a saucepan). Like Abi, I will also have a think and post when I think of something.

Good luck with the preparations for your journey!

One handled saucepans, you'll only find a one-handled small milkpan here. Tipping stuff out of the two-handled pans is a recipe for an accident.

Cukur I bought a 1 handled saucepan from Tefal but it was pretty expensive but like you said 2 handled pans call for accidents which I am very prone to so the extra few liras are nothing compared to what I would pay for burn treatment hehe.

I would bring some favourite foods as you dont get them here in Çeşme but I would imagine in Didim with there being more expats in the area that you would probably find more than what we get here.

I don't think freeview works over here, maybe someone else will be able to tell you. You will have to pay tax on the TV.

Cosmetics are expensive so tell your wife to pack enough face creams, make up etc to last her a while.

If either of you are taking medication regularly, if you let us know what it is we can check and see if you can get it here and how much it is,

Re pans we have an Esse shop in Alanya - german quality but not German prices. Cheaper than the UK they also sell kitchen tools and knives again cheaper than the UK. The cutlery is very good but expensive although you can buy cheaper here for instance Carrefore and Metro the quality isn't always good. My çay demlek is still going strong after nine years and İ don't know if it's still true but previously people advised against Uk kettles as they didn't boil as long as Turkish and you need to sterilise the water?

İ remember how excited İ got when İ found tea towels for sale still a rare item. Also ladies shoes don't come in large sizes likewise bras.

I have never had a problem with my turkish kettle thank god and I bought it about 3 years ago in Tansaş on sale. I also have an electric turkish tea kettle which is amazing as I dont have the patience to wait for the water to boil on the stove Posted Image

Ladies bras are very hard to find in large sizes and good quality and like Aine said shoes are hard to find it women have over a size 6 or 7 uk.

Keith as for a tv I would buy one here as Abi said you have to pay tax from the UK and they arent that expensive here x

Here's a few more items:- hot water bottles, a slow cooker, duvet, duvet covers and sheets as they're never big enough out here. As for a tv, I would recommend buying one from Technosa on Ataturk Boulevard up near the Tax Office, they have good after sales service. You may well end up buying a 40" rather than a 32".

Electronics are cheaper in UK. Camera equipment is cheaper. Portable air-con units.
if you check out hotukdeals site it will all be cheaper than buying in Turkey, but just depends on how much you want to bring in. You may well get your stuff without paying tax - it's just your luck on the day.

I agree with the saucepans, one handled ones are usually very expensive here, if you can find them.
I always bring polyester/cotton sheets from the UK cos they only sell cotton ones (or nylon ugh!) here and I'm not that much of an ironing fanatic!

I always get my laptops from the UK as well so that it's all in English.

Esse had pans albeit small with one handle and so did Tansas and not too expensive. Re duvet covers and sheets you can get them made to any size you want - however - the patterns and colours may be a bit non-european eg. do you want to go to bed wearing sun-glasses. My friends and İ have a test - if you start appreciating the local bed linen it's time for a culture check - book a Uk trip before you start insisting on all your soft furnishings having strips of diamante trim.

A small Ps. Now you have so much more room in your vehicle perhaps you will remember those poor souls who have to go months without;-

Lyles Golden Syrup
Roses Lime Juice
Suet
Vanilla Essence
Apple cream turnovers
Fish and chips in the paper
Real brewed vinegar (Not apple or grape but the brown stuff that leaves your hands smelling lovely but your car less lovely)
Black currant jam (any jam in fact that doesn't run off your knife)

Just seen a lovely duvet cover red- blue - purple - yellow - green and hints of orange. May buy it or perhaps just go on line and book a flight.

Re poodles there are online sites to tell you the papers you need also your local vet can advise you. İf not before get them a rabies vacine when you arrive. İ travelled by Marmara Lines and they have kennels for dogs on board and you can walk them on the decks.

You say you are driving do you have the info re. Uk vehicles in Turkey?

My friend and I also have a test aswell. It's called a 'gopping stuff' test.

Whenever we're caught looking at something that Hyacinth Bucket would quite gladly serve/show we check ourselves and go to the pub and talk about what might just have happened.

Be careful also of the hidden diamante (?) things. They can creep up anywhere from innocent duvets to tea cups.

Not to mention sofas and wardrobes etc. Mum in laws large and bright red kitchen has the most amazing acid etched glass panels but then it goes with the beautiful tiled floors which are a wonderful arab pattern in yellow, blue and red.

One thing the Turkish have in common with other middle-easterners (and they'll swear up and down that this is not the middle-east) and Hyacinth Bucket is that in many ways keeping up appearances is often more important than accepting reality...
