Istanbul has been an important stop on the backpacker circuit since the days of the original hippy trail. Restaurant prices have soared since those halcyon days but you can still get a real taste of the city – even on a student budget..

Whilst the article is a bit wishy-wishy there are few good tips in there.

Another shout are the pilavci which will give you a nice bowl of rice + topping for around 3tl. As well as the countless Kokorec kiosks dotted around.

Good lining for the stomach before a swift half.

Kokorec

I did try it once, well just had a tiny bit. So having tried it, I have to say I would rather starve than eat it again. Posted Image Still I guess it's a good thing we don't all like the same thing.

I feel much the same about it as you Abi, but it smells so nice out in the open air on a cold day!

Try "islak hamburger" -wet burgers- in Taksim 2 bucks for a burger and they taste great. Almost all buffets serve "islak hamburger" but Kizilkayalar(Taksim) is far the best
