For quite some time now, Kalkan Belediye has provided an SMS text alert service, to the local population.

It supplements the tannoy announcements which are made, and is available to anyone, upon request, free of charge. Naturally, messages are in Turkish.

They can be on a variety of subjects, from notice of events taking place, to warnings about potential water outages, or (in winter) warnings of severe weather conditions.

This is a good idea as even Turks have difficulty understanding the tannoy messages although I'm not sure I agree with messages being in English as well - the people living there should learn Turkish. Receiving a text message means that they have time to translate what it says.
