We all know the problems of heavy rain here (and in other countries) when the street drainage system is unable to cope. Understandable perhaps when faced with monsoon-style downpours.

However, this morning I was unfortunately in the centre of Çeşme when the heavens opened for about 30 minutes. The main shopping Street, İnkilap Cadddesi, has had a complete makeover recently but from my observations this morning, no drainage system has been installed or, if it has, it is pathetically inadequate. The street was a fast flowing river offering the torrential rain nowhere to go except downhill to the town square and adjoining roads which were turned into a three inch deep lake made even worse with floating rubbish.

Police and Belediye officials came out in force but the only thing they succeeded in doing was to sound off their sirens and play with flashing lights. To be honest there was very little they could do.

It that was not bad enough the centre of the town had an aroma which resembled raw sewage.

A wet and smelly welcome to the 300 or so passengers who disembarked from the Seabourn Lines Cruise Ship this morning.

Türkiye’ye hoş geldiniz!

When Abi and I walked down to main square at about midday some council workers were hosing off the rubbish but there was still a strong smell of sewage. They did lay some pipes under Inklap Cad., presumably for drainage, before relaying the road but obviously they weren't adequate for heavy rain.

Just can't imagine it (I haven't yet seen the revamped streets) ! I remember the disaster in Istanbul last year when the heavens opened and rain had nowhere to go. What are the council engineers doing, I wonder ? Well, I hate to say it (again), but ............burasi Turkiye !!! Posted Image
