As if there aren’t already enough supermarkets in the Çeşme area two more are scheduled to open soon.

A Migros MMM will open in nearby Ilıca on Friday 13th (!) April and in our small village of Çiftlikköy, Tansaş are due to open a branch soon. We already have Şok here and I am sure with a second supermarket, the only remaining two bakkals will struggle to survive.

You missed out another Tansas at the Dort Yol and another small Migros on the Dalyan road. We'll be swamped with them soon.

I wonder if there is a name for the fear of supermarkets - maybe Tescophobia?

Here in Kalkan, this year will see the following new supermarkets: Bim, A101, Genpa, MIgros, and there is talk of Kipa coming as well.

This new competition has brought down prices. A litre of semi-skimmed milk was about 2.60TL, now you can get it for 1.30TL. I could give you other similar examples.

The staff are just as friendly and will happily chat with you, the shops are bright and clean, stock is properly rotated, and the bill is less than it used to be. Should I complain or be unhappy about this?

Of course, I appreciate that competition means there will be winners and losers, but this is a commercial reality that exists all over the world. The bottom line is this - people vote with their feet. If enough people have Tescophobia, these supermarkets will fail, because everyone will still go to the corner shop.

As for there being too many, market forces will ultimately prevail. If there are indeed too many, then some will have insufficient footfall to make a profit and they will go bust, then the number will be reduced. It's a bit like Darwin's natural selection - survival of the fittest.

One final point. It's not just about us yabancis. I speak to many Turkish people, and they want this. Why shouldn't they benefit from the type of service I describe above? Why should they have to be satisfied with what they have had for many years - preserved in aspic?

This morning In our small and (usually) quiet village of Çiftlikköy, just a few kilometres from Çeşme, we were greeted with multi-coloured balloons, clowns, children dancing, a Lokma stall, an open-air Disco and a crowd of happy, smiling faces.

Was it an early practise run for Monday’s Ulusal Egemenlik ve Çocuk Bayramı? Or a Wedding? Maybe a Sünnet?

No, it was all to celebrate the opening of a new branch of Tansaş. So, will this herald lower prices in the village? Unlikely, I suspect, although the few remaining bakkal owners are naturally concerned to have even more competition.

Sunny and I went to the new 3M Migros today and weren't impressed at all. In addition to the stuff they have in the 2M Migros they did have a selection of European cheeses but were soo expensive and a small selection of garden furniture and a few extra bits and bods. It also felt very cramped. The till we went to was a nightmare because when you tried to pack your bag you had to contend with the credit card reader machine being in the way which made it difficult to pack up stuff. The only thing that saved the day was that if you spent over 50TL you could buy mince for 9TL rather than 22,90TL.

We agreed that we wouldn't go there again and will stick to the 2M in future.

So, size doesn't matter after all!

Most of the shop's layout was fine but the till area was cramped with not enough room for the items that had gone through the till. What they have done is to put two tills in tandem so that the back of one till is blocking the area of checked through items from the other till. The area is small so some soft items could easily get squashed as other items come through and as Abi says the card machine is in the middle of the area making it difficult to get your goods.
There will be problems in the summer when the population soars.

More supermarket news from Çeşme.

BİM (our favourite store) is moving into the premises previously occupied by Ṣok (that is the branch of Ṣok closes to the Total Petrol Station and not the branch of Ṣok on the roundabout opposite the Marina). Keep up everyone!

Presumably BİM will retain their branch in the centre of the town.

When the music stops . . . . !

Sunny and I were talking about that today. We think and hope that they will keep the existing one in the town and the other one will just be open in the summer months.
