Hi,

My friend and her fiance are planning to marry(I have tried to dissuade her following my experience), however they have discovered that he has been diagnosed with epilepsy following an accident and that this is one of the things listed as a barr to marriage.

Can anyone confirm if this is the case or does it just refer to epilepsy which is genetic.

They need to confirm their position quite quickly so any help would be appreciated.

I think it would be a good idea if he went and talked to the Registrar at the Belediye about his epilepsy. As you say it is a bar to marriage, but as it was discovered following an accident there may be some way around it, but can't be certain of that, so he really needs to talk to them. If they can't be married in Turkey they will have to try and get married in the UK..

Certainly epilepsy is considered as a medical reason for preventing marriage.

I think that the fiancé may need to have a medical examination and obtain a doctor's report about his condition.

Thank you to Abi and Sunny for your replies, I assume from them that Epilepsy is not an automatic bar to marriage and it will depend on the doctors report. So there may be a chance they can marry.

Does anyone know what the likelyhood is of this being okay by law, for example is it common for the courts to allow marriage or rare following a doctors report.

I'm afraid I can't help you on that one, although I do know of a couple of people who suffer from epilepsy who are married but whether they declared it I do not know.
