It will be interesting to see whether this fence will now go up as the EU have said they won't fund it.

The European Commission rejected Feb. 7 a request from Greece to help pay to build a fence along its porous border with Turkey, calling the project “pointless.” Greece started building the 10-kilometer long, 2.5-meter high barrier along the Turkish border Feb. 6 to prevent thousands of illegal migrants from streaming into the EU....

Good luck to them I say. Give them a month in the EU and they will be begining to come back. I love Turkey and I am so glad I don't have to worry about the awful time they have in UK. The rich get richer and the poor can't get the benefits they once got. I understand there were many that milked the system but many are genuine. All I can say to my Turkish friends is that we have a saying. The grass is not always greener. Is it that they are trying to stop the Turks getting in or stop the Greeks escaping.

hehe Nitrox. I guess Greece is asking for 5,5 million euros for the fence on top of the 90 million euros already promised from the EU for this year to stop the flow of illegal immigrants who use both Greece and Turkey as stopping off points to the rest of Europe.

The Greek/Turkish border is 125-miles long but Greece only wants to block a small dry section between the two countries because if illegal immigrants want to cross at any other point they would have to cross a river so that particular part is a favoured crossing point.. I was reading an article recently were it said that around 55,000 illegal immigrants were crossing through from Turkey to Greece but can't find a break down of the numbers which would indicate which countries they came from.

To be honest Abi I don't think anyone truly know the number's because if they did how could they be illegal and running free. It's statistic's and who believes them lol.
