A bakery in the central Anatolian province of Eskişehir is rewarding environmentally friendly customers by selling its bread at a discount to those who bring in their own shopping bags....

Well done that man. We should all try to remember to take our own shopping bags with us to cut back on the usage of plastic bags.

I agree with you sunny, people should reduce using plastic bags and bring there own. I also think that shop owners in many places should change thier plastic bags for paper ones, this would mean they are enviromentaly friendly...the only downside to that is in the winter its raining so much that they would break! (this i find when im in england and shop at primark, many times i have had a fallen apart paper bag) xx

I think somewhere in Italy banned the use of plastic bags last year (?)...............it's a darn good idea ! Eskişehir as a city has done wonders for its image in many ways, and this enterprising little bakery owner is to be congratulated for his initiative ! Posted Image

I think there are a number of shops in the UK that now charge for plastic bags to reduce the number used.

One of the good things about living in France is that none of the supermarkets give plastic bags free now. You buy your sturdy carrier bag with the supermarket's name on it for 1 euro which they replace free if you need.

I carry around 2 fabric shopping bags with me everwhere. Because i'm a smug environmentalist...(when I'm not murdering swans)

I also find that the plastic bags from Şok and Bim and the like are useless anyway. Incredibly thin and suseptible to the odd break now and then.

Back on topic...mmm bread.

When I went back to cardiff for xmas we had to pay for our bags in ALL shops!! Clever Wales had introduced the law to help green peace ... 1st day I went shopping the family forgot to tell me about the '5p per bag' and I ended up spending 50p on paper bags that got wet in the rain which couldnt be re used :( xxx

I'm not sure that paper bags are environmentally good. You have to cut trees down to make paper.

I bought some very thin nylon bags in a little pouch for 99p. They are so small they easily squash up in my handbag.
