Hey.
As you may know, I'm getting married to my Turkish fiance on his 3 week leave from the army in May - we've changed the date to the 19th now, instead of the 17th. So once we're married, does this mean I can get my Turkish passport or would it come with my Turkish citizenship after 3 years?
Also, as these new visa rules and residency rules have come in, will being married to a Turkish person make this easier for me or will nothing change?
Just a little confused by it all :')

Hey,

With regards to the Turkish Passport i dont think its something you will get until you are a citizen in Turkey.

When you are married and apply for your residency visa it is a bit easier as you do not need to show that you have money to support yourself over the time you want it. I would guess the best thing to do is apply for a 3 year visa, then you dont have to worry about reneewing it until you look at citizenship xx

Yes Libby, the above is correct -- you can't apply for a Turkish passport until you have citizenship. BUT, you shouldn't really need one ! They are much more expensive than your current UK passport, and besides, when you become a citizen, the Turkish govt allows you to travel freely to & from Turkey on your foreign passport without needing a visa if you have a Turkish kimlik.

I wouldn't bother with the extra unnecessary expense if I were you. Oh, and congratulations on your coming marriage ! Posted Image

I agree with Meral, you don't need to get a T passport. You use your UK one and show your kimlik at passport control.
As you know you can apply for T citizenship once you have been married for three years but it isn't automatically given and usually takes a year or so to actually get it so you need a RP to cover that time.
With the health insurance, as all Turks now have to have cover you will be able to apply to be included on your husband's.

Hi Libby, as everyone else has said - you don't need a Turkish passport! Is there a reason you specifically want one? As you probably know, besides them being expensive they're terribly restrictive! Turkish Passport holders need visas for so many countries, and many Turks will do almost ANYTHING to get a British Passport!Posted Image

How long have you lived in Turkey for?Posted Image

Libby you won't get issued with a Turkish kimlik (ID card) until you become a Turkish citizen. As said before you won't be able to apply for citizenship until you have been married for 3 years, but even if you are living in the UK you would be able to apply for it there when the time comes. :)

Liza, I was just thinking about when it comes to Kaan finishing his army and now this new visa is supposedly come into action now, I thought getting a Turkish passport would take that worry away...like I said, I'm a little confused about it all, I don't get it lol. And I've lived in Turkey for 3 years :) When it comes to next February, I will just apply for 3 years residency in case we do decide to live in Turkey permanently and then see what happens in the future :) I'm not bothered whether I get my Turkish passport or not, I just thought I got told a couple of years ago that we get it straight away or something.

You used to be able to opt for Turkish citizenship when you got married but that was stopped a number of years ago so now you have to wait three years before you can start the procedure of applying. It then takes about a year or so to go through all the required elements. If you want to know more go to the forum that deals with citizenship. Quite a lot has been written about the process there.

When you have been married 3 years (check that as they were planning to make it 4) you must have at least 6 months left on your ikamet to start your process. However you can be included on your husbands SSK from the date of your marriage which gives you access to free medical care. Go to the local SSK office it is quite straight forward just take your marriage book ,ikamet and passport together with your husband and his kimlik.

When you get your marriage book go to the Nufus and get your yabananci kimlik number you need this later and its much easier if you have from the Nufus. We live in Alanya and we had to register our marriage with the police worth checking as it can cause problems if you need to and dont do it.

Libby the only difference about being married to a Turk when you apply for a Residents Permit is that you won't have to show that you have x amount of TL in a bank account as it will be assumed that he is supporting you.

Also be aware that once you have got the RP should you move from the address noted in the RP you must inform the police within 48 hours or you will be fined. They will change the address in the RP but it won't cost you anything.

Aine, I saw your interesting comment about the them planning to change the length of marriage from 3 to 4 year before you can apply for citizenship so will keep my eye on that. Hopefully it will be announced in Todays Zaman or HDN when the time comes.

Ah yeah, so that's much better. That was the only thing worrying me really, about showing bank statements, as I'm hardly going to get a couple of thousand saved up in the next year ha - I wish! At least that makes it easier :) Thankyou!
