Hi everyone

I'm Helen, a Scot currently living in Dundee but hoping to move out to Altinkum in the next few weeks.

I'm hoping to fly out shortly to look for some properties. I've been in touch with a few agents online - Crescent Homes and Turkish Connextions and will be looking at resales in the main. I've heard horror stories about new builds, offsite etc and would love the sale to go through smoothly with all paperwork in place.

I've heard rumours that the Turkish Army checks are not taking so long to complete. Does anyone know if this is true?

I also wonder if someone would be kind enough to give me some guidance on residence permits? I already have a Turkish tax number and two Garanti bank accounts - one in Euros, one in Lira - but no money in them yet! Once I get my remortgage sorted out I will have around £40,000, looking to buy something around the £25,000 mark so I think the authorities will be happy with the balance in my lira account?

When I arrive in Turkey what should I do, step by step, to allow me to obtain my residence permit? Is there anything I should do here in the UK before I leave or do I just turn up in Turkey with a valid visa then apply for residence?

Many thanks in anticipation

Helen

Hi Helen and welcome to the forum, i'm still relatively new myself and i'm located in Didim. Crescent Homes are good as are Resale and Rental, an English lady runs this, have a look at their website. The Residency Permit you have to go to Aydin for and so it is best to get someone to take you there. It is cheaper to take one out for five years.

Hi again, if you go to the Moving To and Living In Turkey Forum this should provide you with some information regarding Residency Permit.

Hi Helen and welcome to our forum. Glad you are in touch with Crescent Homes as they are honest and Carol or Steve who is also a Scot will look after you well. :)

I don't live in that area so can't tell give you a step by step for your RP as different areas ask for different things. The only thing I can tell you is that you will need to go to Aydin.

I'm sure Barbles or Nitrox will be able to tell you what paperwork you will need to take and the different places you will have to visit to do it all.

Hi Helen

I would suggest renting for a bit to see where and what to buy with your money. The only thing you need to get you started is to get a tax number and a bank account both of which are quick and easy to do. The Akbank in Didim is a good place to start. Kubra upstairs has been appointed to the British to help them. She will explain everything to you and make arrangements for you to transfer money if required from the UK.

This is one bit of advice I would give you. If you find a place and you like it but it's in need of a bit of painting and maybe some repair's don't let that put you off as it is much cheaper to get done here than in the UK. Next if you agree to buy a property makes sure your agent ask's to see the TAPU and the habitation certificate. These are the title deeds and permissions granted. If you agree to buy there are a couple of ways to secure your purchase ask if the vendor would agree to having the TAPU logged with a solicitor for safe keeping until the transfer is complete. Or ask your agent to take out a charge on the property to prevent a loan being taken out on it. This is so important in Didim because many have bought property here only to find they have a debt attached to the Deeds and the problems that follow can be a nightmare.

With regards to residence visa. This can be sorted out later at Aydin. Get your Agent to help you as much as possible as that is what you are paying for. Also if you see a property you like with and agent you don't like. That is not a problem here. Tell the agent you like or trust and they can act for you. Sole agents don't exist here.

Get in touch if you need more.

Good luck.

Welcome to the forum Helen. I see that your questions have been answered. I would just add that I agree with Nitrox's suggestion to rent for a while first, preferably for a year so that you can suss out the area properly as it's much easier to move if your renting if you don't like the area after a while.

Whatever you decide to do I wish you good luck.

Wow!

Thanks to everyone for taking time out of their day to reply to me with such great information. I already have a bank account and tax number so that's taken care of but how do I go about renting? That sounds like the way to go until I get my bearings. Would an agent help me with that also?

Many thanks in anticipation.

Kind regards

Helen

As far as I am aware, Crescent Homes only do holiday rentals, I dare say Nitrox will put me right if this is not so whereas resaleandrental do long term rentals and the places the lady has got are both part and fully furnished. Good luck.

You could also try the ad section in Voices which is the local paper for Altinkum. We also have another new member called Kaz1505 a fellow Scot wanting to do the same as you.

Hi Helen,

Welcome to the forum, it's fantastic for advice on everything about Turkey. I too am planning to move to Turkey (Altinkum area) soon, and have found many forums on this site, with invaluable information. After learning about questions to ask, one of the properties I was interested in disappeared off the internet..... I think I asked too many questions, but better that the property disappeared, rather then my money. If I find anything that might be of interest to you, I'll keep you informed.

Good luck,

Karen
