Hi Folks,

Just wanted to say hello, and introduce myself, as I'm planning on taking early retirement and moving to Turkey in the next year.

I've been looking at various properties in the areas of Izmir, Cesmes, Kusadasi and Didim. I've been to Izmir a number of times in all seasons, including this Christmas, where home in Aberdeenshire was actually warmer than Izmir. Posted Image

I am currently in the process of enquiring about a property for resale in Didim, and have contacted a Solicitor in Izmir, with regards to obtaining more information in relation to fees etc. I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who contributes to this site, as I have found the information provided invaluable, whilst I've been visiting Turkey and looking for property. Looking forward to getting to know you.

Welcome to the forum Kaz!

It sounds to me you are taking good first steps into your move and property buying in turkey. Im afraid i cannot give you any advice on buying a property in the area but there are many members from this area and also property owners!

I just wanted to wish you well and good luck for your move to turkey!

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome. Posted Image

Samantha, I would love to buy in Cesme, but they all seem to be way out of my league, if you have anything in the 35-40K brackett, please send me the links.

Abi, I've reading the Turkey Central forums on everything, from driving to visas, as well as buying property over the last few months, and I can honestly say that most of the things I've learned have come from the forums. They are excellent value to anyone with an interest in Turkey, be it visting on a regular basis or moving permanently.

Thank you all so much for all the info posted, it has saved me so much time trawling the internet. Posted Image

Kaz, may I suggest that before you take the plunge and buy a property that you rent for a year or so because it gives you a chance to get to know and area better and what might seem like a lovely place in winter might turn out to be in the middle of disco land in summer and vice versa. It is much easier to move if you have only rented a property than go through the whole rigmarole of selling or putting up with a less than perfect place.
Remember that it is a buyers market so there is no rush and you will be able to get more for your money if you are on the spot.

Hi Sunny,

Thanks for the advice. I did note this advice many times when looking at pages on the forum, and I totally understand the differences there can be between Summer and Winter. I currently own 2 properties in the UK, one is ia flat in the busy West End of Glasgow, and the other is a semi dettached cottage, in a small sleepy village 30 miles north of Aberdeen. I love both places, and differences that there is between them, including culture, lifestyle, neighbours etc.

When I move to Turkey, I intend to keep my flat in Glasgow (my safety net, and has been for 20 years now), and my home in Aberdeenshire has been on the market since Sept 2011. I have always wanted to live abroad, and over the years have searched various countries for suitable properties, but until now haven't found anything, or a strong pull towards a particular country. When I first visited Turkey, I fell in love with it, and my gut instinct told me this was place to lay my hat. Also my health greatly improved (Arthritis/Fybromyalgia), and I've managed to stop my medication every time I've visited Turkey.

With regards to the property I'm interested in, this is the first one, out of hundreds I've looked at, that has jumped out at me, and my gut instinct is again telling me this is the one. I will be back out to Didim, to look at property again, and will not committ my self to anything until after I have done this, all I'm doing at the moment is obtaining info on legal costs, property tax, etc, to allow me to make my final decision with a clear picture, of finances, pros & cons. Again after reading many comments on the forums, I am prepared to walk away if something about the property isn't right.

This site is a credit to all who contribute, and gives so much advice and factual information, which over the last few months I have been very greatful for.

If I do decide to commit myself to this property, I will keep the forum updated on the process, and my experiences.

Wow you really do have it all planned out! I hope everything works out for you and its great that you still have a hideaway in glasgow as a saftey net if anything was to happen.

It is great that you are happy with the forum as it is a great little community! I look forward to seeing what you decide to do in the future and good luck! xx

Hello Karen, Looks like you're already getting good advice here. I definitely second what Sunny said about renting before you buy. It is VERY important to learn the places and the people and get recommendations before you trust anybody.

If I might offer this... In Çeşme, like a lot of other resort areas, there are properties offered to foreigners wishing to buy property, and there are properties where the locals live, which are still very good but are cheaper. Go to where you want to buy and find out where the locals live and look at the properties there. Also check out the property forums (you probably have already) and read the topics regarding using the Turkish property sales websites to find a property rather than those marketed to foreign property buyers. When I moved to Çeşme I lived where the locals lived. I rented a place that I loved for less than I ordinarily would have paid.

Thanks for the compliment regarding the forums. We seem to attract a very friendly and helpful membership, and now you are one of us! Welcome! :welcome:

Hi everyone,

Just a wee update.... One of the properties I was interested in dsappeared off of the internet, after I asked a number of questions propmted by information from this forum!!!! Thanks to you guys and all the information it was only the property that disappeared and not my money!!!

Having now found a number of properties on line, I hoping to be in Turkey for a week in March to look at them, and any others that I see while I'm there. There are a number of different estate agents that I will be in contact with, and I will update you on how things go, once I've met with them. I well aware of the hard selling, and I'm visiting paying for my own costs. Thankfully I work in sales at present, and so am not easily intimidated.

Thanks for info, regarding selling agents, and not having to use who is advertising the property. That makes things a lot easier. As always the info on this site is invaluable.

Thanks again,

Karen

My advice all the time is rent first at around £150 per month. Then take your time. Didim has many properties on offer so don't rush. This is only an Approx on costs but I would expect it to be around 3% of the purchase price. there may be a some extras but this down to anything extra you may require.

I live outside of Didim in a place called Akbuk which I prefer as Didim is for the holiday makers and can become very busy in the summer months.

Good luck Karen
