Fethiye Develet Hospital offers 24/7 services for foreigners. But how does the service work and what will it cost? We explain in our two part article.

No doubt inspired by the clear success of the Esnaf and Letoon private hospitals, the State Hospital in the Arkaca / Çalış area of Fethiye now offers a 24/7 health services for foreigners, with English speaking 'medical translators' on the staff to facilitate access for non-Turkish speakers.

We visited the Hospital to meet the translators and get an idea of costs and how, if you decide to use the State service rather than go private, the services work......

I had to return home just before christmas because that very hospital refused to treat me when i was very ill and remed and healthwatch and my insurers took several days trying to organize me being seen and everytime they thought it had been organized and i was sent to the hospital, the reception area treated me like i was dirt and stated he didnt care whos contacted them and unless i pay up front no can do. I was happy to pay the initial fee which was only £35 but he wanted lots of money to cover it all and i hadnt even been seen and wanted me to agree to pay it and because id also had an injury to my neck i knew it was not going to be cheap. He lied and stated my insurers hadnt contacted the hospital and he couldnt be bothered to move from his chair watching tv that hangs direct over the initial reception area. Needless to say I had to cut my trip short and became extremely ill as a result of the hospital refusing to treat me and the number of days it took remed and healthwatch and my insurers to try and get them to treat me and the man at reception stated very very clearly "we do not treat english and we have no agreement with england". He couldnt of been more clear and he was very rude

I am now fighting very bad infection and neck injury and had the hospital of treated me when they should i wouldn't of been as ill as i am now. There was not one single person there who spoke any english at all and my partner had to do it all and translate. great start to the state hospitals great opening to foreigners and clearly they havent informed the reception desk man of such changes of which anyone would think would be the immediate thing to do when they are the first ones we have to go to when we get there. i had to travel home on 2 planes very ill because of that hospital so i hope they talk to reception and request they get some people skills and not show what felt like a clear dislike for my nationality. im sorry it didnt go well and i sincerely hope they have fixed the issues there if ever i need medical care again.

Very sorry to read about your experience and absolutely amazed at the way you were soo badly treated and hope that you have now recovered. I don't live in that area so I don't know if that sort of thing has happened before there.

It might be a good idea to contact Fethiye Times who wrote the article, Whilst I appreciate it won't help you if you write to them they will most likely contact the hospital and find out what is going on there. If you open the link to that article you will see a "contact" tab at the top of the article, if you click it you will be able to write and tell them about your horrible experience.

Once again sorry to hear about your experience.

I recently learned from a friend that the medical translators at the Devlet are no longer in opertaion, due to their credentials not being up to date. All should be sorted out within the New Year,Probably by the start of next season.

Sorry to hear that terasac had an awful time.Hopefully she's on the mend by now.

Thankyou everyone for your concerns and well wishes x

The insurers did try their best and every day they was liazing with me, remed and healthwatch and with translators involved who were also calling me and assured me they had sorted it out only for me to go all that way in the pouring rain to get there and be greeted in an unacceptable manner. I was impressed with my insurers and they kept me up to date regularly. In the end i had to come home to get treated as the hospital wasnt having any of it and i didnt feel well enough to leave it much longer. Last year I went to the other hospital there which is still being sorted out with insurers hence why I was sent to the state hospital this time. I had an emergency op and i came out of hospital and started to feel very ill within hours after which may just be co incidence. As soon as I went home and i still felt very unwell I had bloods done regular and there was some sort of infection going on but no obvious sign of where it was. Then all my bones started to hurt alot, i lost over 4 stone in weight within 3 months, then all my muscles, my joints, my heart were affected and then i went from normal into full blown menopause within weeks and now my hairs gone white as snow. Ive had so many tests done inc scans and they all show somethings wrong but the specialists dont know what it is or whats caused it. i have a full body dye scan in jan to try and identify it. Sadly because i was already unwell from the illness which the airline was fully aware of as i use them alot and they saw my medical letters etc sadly they took away my wheel bag that i use for hand luggage and they threw it away as they said it didnt meet the criteria even though they let loads of people on with big bags and mine was small. i had to carry my hand luggage which for me was difficult because even lifting a cup hurts me alot and even though it was light hand luggage that airline told me not to take what i cant physically carry next time. They airline have apologized to me on twitter. Carrying the weight damaged my neck and then i caught flu which went straight to my chest. Hence needing the hospital. The sad part is, i was getting married and needless to say it didnt happen because i was too ill. Ive now got fluid on my lungs etc etc etc Im not old and im on high doses of morphine now. i wish i knew what could cause such an illness.

I guess i was just unlucky those two times and yet other hospitals ive been to outside of fethiye were truly amazing

Sorry to read that. As you are high doses of morphine you must be under the care of a doctor/hospital in the UK and would suggest that you ask them what has caused you to be so ill.

Hi Teresac, I'm very sorry to hear about your illness, I hope the doctors find out what's wrong with you very soon, and that you'll soon be well again!Posted Image

I'm not sure if you're allowed to say who your insurers were when you were in Turkey, but I'm guessing they were obviously a British company? The reason I ask is I'm wondering why you couldn't go to the Letoonia hospital in Fethiye for treatment?Posted Image I think I'm right in believing this latest illness and neck injury you had in Fethiye was separate to the one you had previously, so I'm confused as to why the insurers said you couldn't go back there for treatment for your new condition?Posted Image

That's very worrying if that's the case! As you know yourself health insurance cover is so important for when you travel abroad, so it's very worrying that this company told you that you couldn't go to the private hospital for treatment!

I had to go to the private hospital in Turkey on one occasion when I reacted badly to a bite and I was seen by a doctor and treated without contacting my health insurance company. The way my insurance worked was I could go for treatment first and then claim afterwards on the insurance. I thought that was how they all worked? That's frightening to know some health insurance companies ask you to contact them before you go to hospital!Posted Image In my case I didn't bother claiming for my treatment, it was less than £50 including the medicine, and so wasn't worth the bother - and I think you have to pay an excess charge anyway?

But I'm quite alarmed to learn you had to liaise with the insurance company first! What would happen if someone had a bad road traffic accident or suffered a heart attack? Surely they wouldn't have to contact the insurance company first!Posted Image

Whatever the outcome I hope you get better very very soon!Posted Image
