"I once had a chat with someone who knew about these things some five years ago"
One thing that has changed in that time is the introduction of reasonably cheap LED lighting, this would I think make it possible to have a small system that would give you power for lighting and the odd laptop but probably not enough run the aircon, washing machine or dishwasher.
Any one know if photovoltaics could occupy the same panel as the solar water heater? It should be possible as the photovoltaics use the UV end of the spectrum and water heating uses the IR end.

I was doing a bit of serching and found this http://solimpeks.com/
A Turkish solar power company, they make the standard solar water heaters but also produce PV panels and hybrid panels for hot water and electricity. I don't have the ready cash to do anything at the moment but it is useful to know where you can get such a system from.

Thanks for that link YC. Yes, it is good to know where you can get these things, for future reference.

That web site was very interesting. By coincidence I have just had their water system installed and have to say I am really impressed. The examples they show on the photovoltaic system are in the UK. No examples shown of anyone using it in Turkey. It looks to me a very expensive system. If it is for lighting where you don't have electric power. Small solar panels used for caravans and a leisure battery of 110 amp hours and a 12 volt system around the home.
