A play about violence against women saw its opening night on Thursday evening at the İzmir State Theater and is aimed at building awareness of the issue, which has become commonplace in Turkey.
As the abuse of women continues to rise, artists have been showing increasing interest in the subject through their works. The İzmir State Theater decided to speak out against the issue by staging a theater production titled “Anam, Bacım, Avratım” (Mother, Sister, Wife).
Speaking to reporters about the play, İzmir State Theater Director Hülya Savaş said, “Our aim in staging such a play is to raise awareness about the issue [violence against women] among the public,” and added that the play will be on stage until May of next year at the İzmir State Theater.............

It is good to see that this play is being staged. I hope that films highlighting the problem will be made and aired on TV instead of all the awful ones showing domestic violence as acceptable.

Yes, it is good to see that a play like that will be performed. It said in the article that it run until May so there will be plenty of time for people to go and see it. I don't know if Turkish people are keen theatre goers or not or even if it is expensive. I do think that only a very small percentage of people will go to see it.
However, as you say if they also show films and have tv series that highlight the problem that would reach a lot more people, especially the younger ones. Whilst young people may be living in a household were domestic violence is common place and thought to be acceptable should they watch those sort of programmes they would see that in fact it isn't acceptable. Actually I wish that they showed a lot less violence of any kind on TV,

I am off to İzmir tomorrow so will call into the theatre and see if they have tickets for sale there. I would love to go and see it. May not understand most of it but Im sure it will still be a good show.
