Hello everyone,

I would like to teach at a private highschool in Istanbul starting in September 2012 and my overzealous google searches led me to this forum! After reading several threads - I have seen that there is indeed the good/bad/ugly about teaching in Istanbul... Regardless, my heart is still set on trying... at least for a year :)

A little about my educational background...

BA in English Literature
B.Ed (specialized in International Education)
MA in English Literature

I have dual citizenship (Canadian/Turkish) and am a new high school English Literature/Humanities teacher in Canada (1 year experience) - and currently hold a non-teaching position at a post-secondary institution.

I would like to know:
1) Where I can look for teaching positions
2) What the best times for teacher recruitment are for the Fall 2012 year, and
3) Any information about salaries

If any of you could provide me with some links or advice, I would greatly appreciate it :)

Thanks in advance...

Cheers,

Hi Flanur and welcome to our forum. I will leave it to other members who are in the teaching profession here to advise you on the information you will need.

Glad to see you have obviously been looking through the posts to see how things are within the teaching profession here and seeking advice in advance of a possible move. The good thing is that having Turkish nationality will open a lot more doors to you I would have thought as you won't have the hassle of getting a work permit which will be such a benefit to you.

Good luck, I hope it all works out for you :)

Welcome to our forum flaneur.
If you are looking for TEFL jobs then Dave's ESL cafe is one place to look.
If you google private schools Istanbul it will come up with a lot of schools that you can apply to. With your qualifications you can also try the same for universities.
Unlike most foreign teachers, you won't have to worry about getting a work permit as you have Turkish nationality.
As to recruitment times, I would keep an eye out from this autumn/fall onwards but expecting most adverts to appear in the spring so if you want to send your CV out I would chose the spring too.

I'll leave it to someone else to provide information about up to date salaries.

With your great educational background you will be more than enough for private highschools...so my advise there is to stay away from them.

Go, instead, for the foundation schools. Enka, Robert College, MEF etc...

If you apply from Canada you will be classed as overseas hire and will qualify for a high Istanbul salary ( $2500 p/m), free housing and moving costs.

Good luck in your quest.Posted Image

Thank you for your kind advice and warm welcome Abi, Sunny, and Clinky.

Sunny, I tried on Dave's ESL Cafe (my colleagues recommended that site) unfortunately, the Turkish forum seems very quiet (and perhaps underused). That is why I decided to join this forum. I have google'd several private schools in Istanbul - and there are quite a few, ranging from Robert to Uskudar. The only thing I worry about is the fact that I have limited teaching experience (1 year). I find with the more prestigious schools, they require at least two years as a minimum. I am hoping the MA might be helpful in balancing that deficiency. As well, thanks for the heads up about the teacher recruitment dates :) I will look more vigorously in the fall!

Clinky, I looked at the schools you mentioned, again I worry about my experience. I feel confident in my teaching skills, but of course, the administrators may want to hire a seasoned teacher. As for the universities, do you think they require alot of teaching experience as well?

In terms of salary, I am seeing the 22000 USD - 33000 USD range - I am guessing this is average?

You guys are a wonderful source of information, thank you for your responses!
