Hi All!
It just ocurred to me that I will want to use my cell phone in Turkey and I will start asking around here re what deals there are for international phone calls (that are not exorbitant). Would you recommend switching to a particular company? Do i have to declare the cell phone when in Turkey? Thanks...Elaine11

When you arrive at the airport you may well be met by a friendly young English-speaking student (many of my students did this for the last two years) who will offer to link your mobile phone to the Turkcell network.
Roaming is convenient but expensive, of course.
If your phone has a removable sim card (not all do, depends on your contract) you can buy a local sim card for 9TL and put that in to your phone. Your phone has to be registered properly in the Turkish system, or the card will stop working after a few days. Last year the mobile phone shops (Turkcell, Vodafone or AVEA, take your pick) in the big 5M Migros shopping centre could do the registration process for you for no extra charge.
If your phone doesn't have a removable sim card, you can buy a cheap second hand phone and simcard for about 50TL in 100. yıl caddesi, and try to sell it on at the end of your stay.
If you don't want to bother with a mobile, you can make calls inside and outside Turkey by landline from TürkTelekom offices (there are plenty around) or else from any small shop that advertises 'kontörlü telefon'. Landline calls are really very cheap. For international calls better to use a shop near your house so you can challenge them easily if they try to overcharge.
