Yet another supermarket has opened its doors in Çeşme – A-101. We also have Migros, Tansaṣ, Dia, BİM, two branches of Carrefour Expres and two branches of Ṣok. I think that’s all!

Apparently, A-101 Yeni Mağazacılık A.S was established in March, 2008. There are currently 950 branches throughout Turkey and the target is 2,000 by the year 2015.

You forgot the Migros express or whatever they call the little ones, in the High Street and Pehlivanoglu in the Vakif Bank Ishanesi.

Well, in my defence I didn’t include Pehlivanoğlu because, either
1. I couldn’t spell it, or
2. I completely forgot about the store, tucked away as it is in a rather run down and not very inviting shopping ‘complex’. Much more likely!

As for the tiny Migros Mjet shop on the High Street. Well the entrance is so small, you’d need a Migroscope to find it!

Anyway, the grand total is 10 supermarkets in our small town. Profitability likelihood? Slim.

Did you count the Tansas and Sok in Dalyan and the new Sok by the Total garage in Cesme town?

Profitablilty? Probably some in the summer when the hoards descend on us. :(

Also, I think they are building a Kipa in Ilica where there are several other supermarkets including Dia and Bim.

And don't forget Alacati's Migros and Bim!

No, I am not counting Dalayan or even Çiftlikköy where we live where there is a branch of Şok. Just the centre of Çeşme. Not counting nearby Ilıca, either, or Alaçatı. And if a Kipa does land in Ilıca, it is likely to be a Kipa Ekspres where prices are higher than a fully-blown Kipa or Kipa Extra.

But I did include the Şok by the Total garage. There are two branches here now.

Nice to have a choice, don't you think?

Yes, of course, you’re right. Agamemnon. But when you examine the 10 supermarkets in Çeşme, the choice is more limited than it first appears.

For example, do you shop at Carrefour Marina or the branch on Atatürk Caddesi. And what about taking advantage of a special offer at Şok? Do you spend your money at the branch opposite the Marina, or the one only a couple of hundred yards away towards the Total Petrol Station?

Of course, you can go to Migros having decided which one is more convenient, of course. Probably the new Migros-Jet in the main shopping street or, for more choice, the larger branch on the edge of town on Atatürk Caddesi.

There’s Tansaş as well to consider but we mustn’t forget Tansaş, Migros and Şok (50% of the supermarkets here) are all part of the same retail group anyway!

That leaves you with the ‘slip-off -the-tongue’ Pehlivanoğlu (which visitors may have difficulty in finding tucked away as it is in a rather forgettable shopping precinct – they certainly couldn’t ask a passing stranger in view of its name!), A-101, the latest 'kid on the block' which still has to prove itself as a courteous, efficient, value-for-money retailer in the town, and last, but certainly not least, good ol’ BİM.

Yeah, let’s hear it for BİM! Somewhat limited choice of goods, I grant you, but friendly service, excellent own brands and prices difficult to beat.

No choice really!
