There are so many restaurants in Altinkum they almost outnumber the estate agencies! Every one has something different to offer but even I haven't managed to eat at all of them yet (and I probably never will now - my other half is such a great cook that we generally have half of Altinkum coming round to us for dinner instead of going out!)

But I still have some favourites - touristy and non-touristy, new and old, run by friends and by strangers... here are some, where to find them and why I like them! Oh and I am very open to some free dinners for the mentions, guys! :)

Istanbul Restaurant - on "the gauntlet" between main & second beaches. Never cheap but the food is great, the atmosphere's a lot of fun and if you make friends with Metin, the manager, he might just do you a grilled kalamari off-menu - yum!

Pinocchio's - on Main Beach. The best turkish food of all the beachfront restaurants (as well as international) and this great bread that's kind of like a pillow! Onder and the boys usually stay open most of the year (they only close for essential maintenance) so this is a real expat community haunt. And they do dance shows sometimes - V V amusing!

Dolunay - on Main Beach. Fabulous location and v beautiful, with a fountain in the courtyard. Excellent service despite making the waiters wear orange polo shirts and black cravats. Apparently Turkish people come to Altinkum especially to visit Dolunay! Anyway nice food, great desserts and they make their own ice-cream. Yummy.

Karcicegi - all the way down the other end of the beach, at the harbour. Believe it or not, I went to this place, fell in love with the food (delicious and well-priced), the decor (beautiful stone tiles) and the automatic paper-towel dispenser in the loos; I came with 5 friends, ordered 5 kebabs and ended up with enough food for 20; and then when I decided I needed gainful employment, my other half suggested the estate agency next door so now I work for the company, sort of! Anyway if I can still choose eat their food after eating it for lunch every day at work, it must be good! So try it! And if it's summertime, pop in and say hello to me next door.

Golf Pizza - on the main road, just up from the beach roundabout where you get off the bus to go to the beach or on to go to Soke/Izmir/Bodrum. On my way home late at night I have often stopped in here and had a nightcap; and then stumbled in the next morning red-eyed to have a delicious breakfast served by someone just as hung-over as me! Very CLEAN - which is very valuable when you are feeling under the weather! Oh and they have a big screen.

Pagos Ocakbasi - just down the road that Golf is on the corner of. I think it may be changing its name but fabulous barbeques. I was first lured in by the delicious smell of grilling lamb and the taste lived up to the promise!

Aspava - on the main road opposite the original million shop. There are a whole bunch grouped together here that look the same and serve the same food so it's a little confusing but nice, clean, fresh, cheap and genuinely turkish (ie not dressed up for the brits).

Sofra - next to Gima on the main road. For some reason this seems to have fallen out of favour a little but I love it. Great decor, excellent service, lovely wine (ask for the red Senfoni) and a choice of hot buffet food or off the menu. And a delicious dessert trolley too...

Arti - on the main road in between Bim and Tansas. Haven't been there yet but it looks lovely and I looked at the menu the other day - looks yummy. Someone will have to tell me if it is as good as it looks!

Name unknown - way past Apollo Temple, nearly at the Aquapark, on the sea side of the road. Actually, practically IN the sea. I can't remember what it's called but fresh food and an unbeatable view out towards the Greek islands.

Olio - somewhere in the region of second beach. I only went there once, with the council Turkish class to celebrate getting through the course without our heads exploding! But the food was great and they do beef carpaccio - excuse me while I grow long canine teeth and start to slaver unattractively. I was a vegetarian once, you know.

OK, those are my faves... now it's your turn. Do you agree? Disagree? Have I left something out? I probably have so tell us about it!

Hi Laura,

must agree with you about Olio's, its got to be the best resturant in Altinkum, Corolla and her husband have a wonderful resturant, with a good choice of Meditreanium food, lovely music and great atmosphere.

Ucasu on Ataturk Blvd, near Bimm, a superb Turkish resturant, with free meze/salad/bready for all, and good prices

Cafe More, just up from Ucansu, run by two sisters, and the best home made pasta in Altinkum

Viva, on Ataturk Blvd opposite the new notary, excellent turkish food and prices

Anadolu Safrasi, just past Migros, great turkish food with free meze/bread

Green Wine Bar on Edge Caddessi, not far from the Pork Shop

Blue resturant in Yesikent lovely food, beautiful surroundings and you can use the beach if you are eating there, also do a free car service

Cafe del Mar on the sea front at Dolphin Square, excellent food of all types and really cheap prices, just sit and watch the word go by!

Chill Out Bar, opposite Yagmur aparments, it is what is says just chill out in the sofas

Friends Bar, near the Oracle Hotel

Cafe Plaza, Rising Sun, Hilltop and Pyramid Bar all great frindly bars.

Just a few places that I would thoroughly recommend

Just to bring this topic up to date, restaurants we've used/use Bistro(just off Ataturk Boulevard near Golf Bar), Didim Diner, Queens Head Music Hall, Temmuz, Bistro Waterwheel, Panormos Hotel, Mola, Roka, Pinocchios and Four Seasons(both of these are a little more expensive than the others but worth doing).

For Fish and Chips there's The Chippy and Moby Dicks(3 in One) both do other dishes.

Traditional Turkish, ALO24, Ucansu, Didim Sehir Lokantasi and Anadolu Sofrasi

Fast food, Pizza pizza, Burger King, Dominoes Pizza and Cadde

Since moving out here, the Bistro Waterwheel has changed ownership back to Ozzie, who, in the past, has provided the best Sunday Lunch and still does at a reasonable price. A word to the wise is that a meze of dips is presented at no extra charge but if you're not that hungry then tell the waiter when you order that you don't want it. Sweets vary, on our last visit it was Apple Crumble, the time before that it was Pancakes with various choices of filling. We have also been here in the week and again, had an excellent meal.

Moby Dicks, we went there this week and had a good meal but because of the potatoes that are in season at the moment, the chips weren't up to their usual best.

Domino's Pizza have moved their store up the boulevard to where Sofra use to be(next to Carrefour).

Ucansu is no more, it is now called Destina, serving Soup, Pide, Kebabs, Doners, Oven Dishes, Lahmacun, Pizzas and Desserts.

Gave Destina a try this afternoon and the food was excellent. We were presented with a meze of garlic and the spicy tomato dip, turkish flat bread with cheese on it and a beautiful salad, it was so well presented it was a shame to eat it !! For the mains my wife had chicken skewer while I went for the beef and cheese lahmacun and we shared a portion of chips which were also done to perfection. Had to laugh when we sat down as the condiments had got Ucansu stamped all over them !!Posted Image Destina provide a home delivery service.

I totally agree with pinocchios. When me and Kaan lived in Altinkum, we didn't go there often - our budget wouldn't reach that far hehe - but when we did ever go, or I went with family/friends, the food was amazing. Myself and Kaan also went to the Chinese restaurants a lot, favourite being My Chinese Restaurant near to Dolphin Square, opposite Kalyon bar. Still a bit on the pricey side, but definitely worth it! We also stuck with a lot of the Turkish restaurants, mainly Altindag that was at the top of Ege Road, opposite Altin Ekmek :)

I liked India Gate. I felt it was the nearest you would get to a curry from UK and the portions was good. A small place but popular. Take away and delivery service too and not very expensive.
Tell where else I really liked when I was in town was a small place just up the road next tot he new mosque, there is a pharmacy on the corner. He is a smashing blokey there. One day my friends and I wanted a beer, as they are so close to the mosque he said he wasn't allowed to serve it, but if we went to the beer house up the road he would bring our food up to us, which her did. Talk about service.

Living in Didim as we do, we've found the local people to be very accommodating. India Gate is on our door step but we've yet to give it a try. Yesterday was one of our friends birthday and so we treated him and his wife to a meal at Didim Diner. Yet again, Selma didn't let us down and provided us with excellent fayre.

I couldn't make up my mind about Didim Diner as I was never sure if it was a restaurant or a gift shop. I did prefer the Bistro when Nureyetin was there much better than the Diner. Of all the places I have eaten I would rather go to a Turkish place like Sehir Lokanta. But horses for courses I guess.

Steph, no worries, everyone has an opinion, you have my respect. I can understand your confusion with Didim Diner, the reason that stuff is there is because Selma had another outlet where she was selling it but had to give it up. These items are now at reduced prices to get rid. Bistro at the moment is a bit hit and miss being the winter season but I hope it improves with the summer season coming. We too love the Turkish experience, our favourite is Anadolu Sofrasi but we intend going to Sehir Lokanta having last eaten there some three years ago but we did enjoy it !! We also like Destina(formerly Ucansu), be warned, avoid the oven dishes as they use poor quality meat with loads of gristle, everything else on the menu seems fine.

Ooo Les, sounds lovely at the old Uncansu, can't beat a bit of gristle. I love Anadolu, had some lovely hamsi in there this last summer. There was a place in YeniHisar called Et Lokanta I loved the food there and they was always busy, but now it is a supermarket, shame. You know what I find lovely in the small Turk places, the salad, it's a plate full and costs peanuts. Oh how I wish I was there now for a big bowl of soup and crusty bread, beats our Heinz Tomato soup,,,
