Everything stops for 5 days as the entire country gets on a bus or plane and goes and visits its relatives.\ n\nThe religious significance of the festival is to mark Abraham (in Islam Ibrahim)'\;s sacrifice to god of a sheep (instead of his son which he nearly did but at the last moment didn'\;t have to) and the head of a h ousehold will traditionally have a sheep slaughtered on the first day of t he festival. One third is given to the poor\, one third to friends and nei ghbours and one third eaten by the household. Which is how we ended up wit h a fridge full of sheep knees this January. (My other half made a soup th at he and his friends thought was a wonderful delicacy and I thought was t he most awful thing I have smelled in a long time and to date has been the only thing I have been unable to face eating since I have been in Turkey& #33\;)\n\nTraditionally Kurban Bayram here is followed on TV by a week of news coverage of escaped sheep and cows causing havok in the streets and p eople injuring themselves trying to save the butcher'\;s fee and perfor m the slaughter themselves.\n\nDon'\;t underestimate the importance of Kurban Bayram because it really is important here.
