Turkey Blog - The Black Widow Of Incirlik Air Base

I wasn't an OSI agent any more, that had ended four years ago. I was now a contractor, doing personnel security investigations for AFOSI Detachment 522, from my house in Incirlik Village. I seldom got visitors, so when I heard the doorbell ring, I thought it was my landlord who lived downstairs. But it wasn't.

I have stayed in some great pensions, as well as some real dumps. Often I just show up in town and start walking, looking for the area where most of them are. And I'm usually so tired that I'm not very picky.

I prefer pensions,...

It was my fourth day in Izmir. I was mostly over the jet lag, still in-processing and attending various briefings. I'd been to the office once already, and met everyone. As expected, they gave me some time to learn my way around İzmir using a rather simple map I got from my welcome brochure.<img style="float:right; margin: 10px 0px 10px...

"Security violations are the responsibility of the unit," I replied.

I was in my usual place on weekends, sitting at the bar of Kybele Rock bar in Izmir. I was talking to a new acquaintance, Nuri, a well-groomed businessman in a tailored suit. Nuri told me he was in the import business, and we talked for an hour or so. After exchanging business cards, I left. I didn't expect to hear from him again, at least not in the...

Turkey Blog - Guarding The Kumluca Ethnographic Museum

The books said Kumluca was a boring, non-happenin', agricultural city with no beach, no attractions, and no reason to visit it. It was right off the highway I was on, so I decided to check it out. I wanted to go to the belediye (municipality) to see if they had any brochures. Eventually, I found the belediye and got some surprisingly nice brochures,...

I was trying to get to Arycanda. It's an ancient city with appreciable ruins, north of Finike, near a town called Gokbuk. I followed the signs until I found that the road to Gokbuk was closed. Well, I didn't come all that way to go back empty handed. So I decided to find a detour.<img style="float:right; margin: 10px"...

I was on one of my treks, from Antalya to Kas. I went to see this little dot on the map, the town of Beldibi. It's basically a long row of package-holiday hotels, fronting an unexciting beach, and an alley behind it where the locals sell stuff to the people who venture out from the hotels. <img style="float:right; margin: 10px"...
