Akyarlar

Previously a Greek port called "Kefalouka," Akyarlar lies 30 kilometers east of Bodrum on the southeast edge of the Bodrum peninsula. Here you'll find a more traditional Turkish village, surrounded by villas and a yacht harbor, with a constant sea breeze keeping things cooler than you'll experience in Bodrum or some of the other local resorts.

Because of that constant breeze, called "meltem" in Turkish, Akyarlar has become a center for windsurfers from all over Europe. The beaches here are hard-packed with sand, but other beaches with softer sand await you at nearby Simin beach to the west, or Karaincir to the East.

Furthur along the Peninsula, toward Turgutreis, is a nice beach just north of the Huseyin Burunu Light House, which is popular with Turkish and European campers and windsurfers, and which offers a lovely view of the Greek island of Kos and other smaller islets.

Since Akyarlar is a more traditional Turkish village, you'll see lots of Turkish holiday makers here, and restaurants serving more traditional Turkish cuisine at lower prices than in Bodrum.

Besides hotels and pansiyons, Akyarlar also has a camping ground, called "Camping 86" (tel: 0232 393 6233).
